Why the Emerson Commander?

A lot of people seems to carry the Emerson Commander and from what I can tell (not actually been handling one myself) it looks pretty good, but then, so does a lot of other folders, am I missing something here? Comparing folders priced $150 or more, I can get a folder with a stronger lock and a bigger blade (say 4" or so) than the EC and all this talk about the wave feature being the fastest, well what numbers are we talking about here, 0,5-1 second faster than other models, is that really that big a deal? Just curious. I hope I don't get crucified by the "usual suspect"-gang now ;)

Untill you use the "wave" you won't know what your missing. The only thing faster is probably a fixed blade. Or a folder already opened. :) Try one, you'll like it.

basically the Commander is just a damn good knife. I'f it's the best knife for the job depends on the job. The recurve is an awesome blade style visually and as a useful tool/weapon. the wave is definately the fastest way to get a folder out and open. I have a Kershaw Boa with the speed safe and it is hella fast but my waved PSARK comes out of my pocket already opened. Emerson knives are very well engineered (although i will admit a lot of people including me have to take them apart and mess with them a little to bring them to optimal performance level) if you're looking for a big bombproof cutting machine the Emerson will definately do the job. You can check out the Mini Commander too which is a little cheaper and I actually like a little better than the Commander.

Now that is a great question. Even supposing that the wave opening is the fastest, just how fast do you need to open it? Especially when the difference is a matter of 1 second or 2...

I'll admit that the wave is pretty neat, visually, but other than that it's not anything special, and I surely would not call the Emerson Commander bomb proof by any means.

Mike, I don't know much about defense, but I would think that even a second or two advantage would be beneficial. Bombproof? The Commander has G10 and Titanium, can't get much better than that. As far as the lock goes, the only problem I had was dirt build up (from the 3 in 1 I used on the blade) which caused lock slippage (has happened to me on BM's and Spydercos also). After I cleaned it, it performed beautifully. I have had my Commander for about 3 weeks. Have carried it non-stop. BTW, the wave is friggin' awesome!!!!
You won't regret this one,
Matt

)I had a 2000 commander lefty (after a trade with emerson with a '98 :( ) anyhow it's a great knife, well worth the money even after the changes, it's well made and real solid, and nothing beats the wave. though the knife can be opened easily with the disk, using the wave can invaluable for not only speed but in special circumstances such as an injured hand, or gloves (tried it with both, it's so much better:) )

May I ask why do you prefer Mini?

You see, Commander is one of those mine "to buy 2002" knives.;)

I've been throwing heads and tails about should I choose Mini Commander or the bigger one.

So any info very wellcome!

the commander rules simply because it can be deployed faster than any other folder imho - that is the reason for its popularity imho...........and i USED to think then wave was a gimmick lol............not hardly, handle one and ya will agree i bet,.
