Why the leather handle on survival knife?

Jeb,
Good question, and unfortunately I don't know the answer,...yet. I do know that is what they 'Mil-Spec', and sometimes that doesn't always make sense. I will try to find the answer for you.

The 7" Marine Fighting/Utility knife is spec'd and built with a leather handle also, but the Military specifies a black, 'anti-fungal/anti-rot' treatment that we dip the handles in. but for whatever reason, they don't ask for it, nor wnat it on the 5" Pilot's survival knife.

If you do have any problems however, please let us know. We do stand behind our products. Thanks for being a customer!

Even though my pilot's survival knife doesn't have the anti-fungal/rot treatment, the handle has been used in rainy environments, held onto with sweaty hands, and covered with the blood of deer and other animals many times. There is no loosening, shrinking, cracking, or any defect of any kind, except a slight darkening of the leather, which I don't call a defect.
