Why the mystery steel hocus pocus?

When neither crafsmanship nor performance is affected one way or the other by a shroud of mystery, why do companies continue to market magic steels? Why QS14, INFI, Carbon V, surgical stainless, etc?

All this hocus pocus sounds like turn of the century snake oil sales.
