Why the state of New York?

Having bought a few knives in my days, I've come to realize that there are quite a few current and past brand names coming out of NY. For example, our beloved KABAR and Camillus, OKC, and Utica.

How did that come to be? Is there something historically about NY that knife makers and the companies they worked for found desirable in NY?

I like NY for many reasons, so this isn't a question in which I want to find fault in the fine state of NY.

I'm only interested in how so many top name companies wound up in NY given that in today's climate, NY seems to be less friendly to knives and firearms.

Can those in the know lend some insight?

Major population center around the time that they were created. One knife maker, and others spring up around them based on a budding industry. Some former employees moving over, some suppliers, etc. Also had access to major modes of transportation to bring in raw materials and export finished goods.

Not unlike Colt, Remington, and Winchester coming out of Connecticut in the 1800's.

Thanks Candyman87. I hadn't thought about the big 3 firearms guys and Ct before. I was guessing there might had been some knifemaking knowledge that had settled in NY when they came from overseas generations ago.
Just kind of struck me as odd when I was cleaning knives and noticed I had several NY stamped knives.

I agree with Candyman87. I would just note the big difference between New York City and New York State. Everything is very regulated in the City.
