A great deal of people use the Rucksack Model, I use to have two of them but now my Sak is the Outrider Model. It is a Rucksack with Scissors and small Phillips screw driver added.

I think so many people use the Rucksack is because Doc Ron Hood used it in some of his Videos.

How many of you use the Rucksack because you saw it in Doc Ron Hood's Videos?

I had my Rucksack before I ever saw a Hood video.

I'm getting a Tradesman for Christmas. It's a Rucksack with the addition of a metal saw/file, pliers, and a philips head screwdriver. For me, it has everthing I want, and nothing I don't--except bulk. It is considerably thicker/heavier that the Rucksack. The Ruck can go in a pocket. The Tradesman will definitely go in a belt sheath.

I'm thinking of giving the Rucksack to a friend. I'm wondering if I'll miss it for the woods as I won't be as likely to use the file, pliers and screwdriver.

I'm hoping Buzzbait chimes in on this. I know he likes (or used to like) the Tradesman.

Never seen any of Ron Hood's videos. The ruck is just a knife with right combination of tools for ME. YMMV

I have had a rucksack for years but I don't drink wine, so I bought a Trailmaster, a Rucksack with a Phillips screwdriver instead of a corkscew.

Having said that, a couple of years ago I was having a barbeque on the beach with my family, when a young Polish lady approached me and asked if I could open her wine bottle for her.
Luckily I had my Rucksack with me that day!!

I prefer the Rucksack because it is the first and only large SAK that I own.

I have never seen the Outrider in person.
But if I do see an Outrider, and if I like it, it will replace my Rucksack (I do miss my SAK scissors).

I don't know anything about Hoods videos?

Allen.

I have both a Rucksack and a Trail Master. Yep I did 1st see the Rucksack in one of Ron Hood's videos. Up till then I didn't know a lockblade SAK was around. Also I like the larger size. Those two aspects are what drove me to get em not any missed placed hero worship. I have had slipjoints close up on me when I was younger and since then usually only carry lockblades. Since getting the Rucksack, it has proven itself to be a very useful, quality tool :)

I usually carry an Explorer. I like the smaller size for pocket carry. The Main blade rarely gets used, as i have a good strong side folder almost always, Spyderco Military usually. The Explorer has the magnifying glass, which I like for firestarting, can opener, scissors, a big and small blade, and the often used toothpick. One of my favorites is the Worckchamp, but it's too big for pocket carry.

I never understood why so many people use and tout the Rucksack when the Outrider is about the same size and comes with scissors which are so handy. The Outrider is now my SAK for hiking and backpacking, though my EDC is a Super Tinker because it's a lot smaller and I don't need much knife on a daily basis.

I first became aware of the Rucksack in a HW video, but carried a Hunter at the time. Later bought a Huntsman and a Rucksack. I sorta rotate them. I grab whichever is handy. Really want to check out the Outrider.

before anyone buys any new sak you should search and see if the model you want has been upgraded. i think i saw it on cutleryshoppe.com where many of the upgrade models have the addition of a stick pin and writing pen plus i think a small eye glass corkscrew driver. basically the same things that come on the swiss champs

I'm another rucksak user who has never seen a hood video.

I wanted the full size SAK with a corkscrew and can opener. Nothing worse than being miles from home and having a bottle of wine or a can of food that you cannot open properly.

i have been carrying a rucksak or a leatherman for the last 30 years or so, the saw has been a very usefull item and that is the essence of the rucksack, the blade is a bit bigger , and the other tools are usefull, but if there is one tool beside the blade i would take it is the saw blade, as it performes well above the amount of size and weight that it brings to the package.

if you asked ron hood he would most likely tell you the same, the saw blade is longer on the rucksak than on the smaller SAK's and the leatherman. that extra length adds a little bit of efficiency to the use of the tool. lately i have been carrying the one haded trailmaster, and it has been a good knife.

I started carrying the Outrider based on an old functon on the Vic webpage where you could select certain tools, and it would tell you the closest model.

Bought back before they were marketed in the US.

I DID first see the Rucksack in use in the Hoods Woods videos. That was the first time I'd seen SAKs used seriously in the outdoors. I was intrigued with being able to buy a $25 knife that would do more than the $100+ blades I was lusting after. I bought one to check it out, and fell in love. It's a great knife with a great set of tools. My wife has an Outrider because of the scissors, and that's a good one too. I do like that the Rucksack's a layer thinner though...
