Why Vegtable tanned leather?

Is Veg leather the only kind that should be used for knife sheaths? If so why?

I have done numerous searches and still have found no definitive answer.

It wet forms and takes tooling much better than the chrome tanned stuff. you can use other leather for sheaths so long as you only want to make a plain one.

Thank you. That clears up alot of things. I will have a picture of my first ever sheath posted in the next couple days.
