Why We Get Spam

There is a sucker born every minute, but...

The random survey of 1,000 U.S. adults was conducted in November and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

...I hope it's "only" 1% (still too much, but 4% sounds a little high).

By the way, I find the "YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS" box on CNN's site pretty funny in this case! :D

What it's really saying is that 4% of the world's population are idiots. I'd say that percentage is a little on the low side.

Still, a good percentage for the spammer scum. Send out a million emails selling something on which you make a dollar profit. That's $40,000 for every spam attack. Not bad when you think about it.

No, that doesn't say 4% of spam emails make a sale. It says of the 1,000 people surveyed 4% had bought something from a spammer at least once in the past year -- that's at least one sale out of who knows how many spam emails they read. Response to a spam mailing is far less than 4%, though the profit per sale is also far greater than $1.

I find it hard to believe that as many as 4% of people who are able to read and reply and respond to email are yet so stoopid they would buy from a spammer, even once.

I bet they do own a Thigh Master, and a Franklin Mint knife too.

I once owned a Franklin Mint knife. :o
I'm still looking for that perfect thighmaster. But I have never ever considered buying something because of spam.

I do have my dignity. :D
