Because they're great knives !

I've had the large serrated one for a couple of years, it's my travelling food prep knife.

I've been after the large and small plain edged models for a good while now, and getting increasingly agitated at not being able to find any :(
Well, the large arrived a few weeks ago, with a considerable amount of help from Mike Dye at New Graham knives, despite them not actually having one in stock (thank's Mike), and the small PE arrived just a couple days ago. I found the small one in an online "Arts, Crafts, and Collectables" store of all places, so it pays to keep looking :D

Whilst I believe it true that the beauty of most Spyderco's is in they're simplicity and outstanding fuction, I also believe that the micarta Calypso's are truely beautiful knives in an aesthetics sence as well as being the height of functionality.
I would also rate the micarta Calypso's above any of the CF models, not only in their classy look, but also in thier use (micarta isn't as slick as CF).

So if we have another forum model next year, or Spyderco decide to treat us to a re-relesed Calypso Jnr, can we please have at least a sprint run of micarta handles for us anal-retentive-absolutly-knutty-knife-collectors ?

BTW - On this subject I would just like it known that I'm NOT above begging if it would help :D

Hi Yog. the thread generated here on the Calypso jr. has convinced me to make at least one run of the FRN version to see viability of the run. They'll be gray FRN with VG-10. We plan to make 1000. They will all be plain edge. We will retain the name Calypso jr name to avoid additional tooling costs in this test. If the response is good, we will consider another run in another color FRN or even a micarta or ?? version.

The "plan" is for November delivery. I'd like to thank all of you for your support in requesting this design. We'll see what happens.

Sal - glad to hear you will be making them in gray.

Will these be distributed through dealers like normal Spyderco product, or will they be available only through the SFO?

Can I put my name in for two? I don't wanna miss out.

(edit)

To keep it on topic, I found a Calpso just like the top one in your photo a couple weeks ago and bought it immediately. I TOTALLY know what you're saying about how cool this knife is. I can't think of a knife I'd rather have. Congrats on your little Calypso collection.

Oh and I'm glad it'll still be called the Calypso Jr. The name fits.

So far the way plans are going, if msrp can stay around where they were when they got discon'ed, I'll be in for 2 of them, if not more.

I'm maddly thinking "how many people can I get one as a birthday present for ?" :D
Hopefully the more of the 1000 I can shift, the more I can try and convince Sal we need a re-run of the micarta series with say S30v blades :p

Hang on, Christmas isn't too far past November, then there's Mother's Day, Father's day, Spring Exinox, the day my eldest nepher said his first word, then ....... :D

Thanks Sal!
A grey FRN VG-10 Spyderco Adept.... I mean Calypso JR. Just what I wanted. And my birthday is in November!

Awesome!!! I hope they are a success in terms of sales and $$ and can make it back into the line up. Wonder if this would be the first model to ever be "killed" and brought back to life?

My first Spyderco was a SS Calypso Jr. It's still my favorite knife and will probably remain so at least until I get a Paramilitary. It's demise has actually hurt sales amongst my entourage. I keep telling friends to buy Spyderco knives, but after taking one look at my Calypso Jr., they don't want to look at any other model. It really is a beautiful knife! Everyone wants to buy it off me, but I can't see myself ever parting with it.

Sal,

I know we have our varying opinions on steel, handle material, tip up/down and to me the design of the Calypso Jr is near perfect. VG10 is great and FRN is more than adequate for a working knife.

The one change that would make it perfect in my mind would be an adjustable pivot.

I realise this adds to the unit cost, and may not be possible for the upcoming run, or at all. This will certainly not affect my taking a couple of grey VG10s.

However, when I'm looking for a knife for life, particularly to give as a gift, something like this really adds value. Please consider this, especially if you look at doing an upgraded run later on in, say, G10 or Micarta, etc.

Just a thought...

sal, nice to hear your bringin back one of my favorite designs, I hope it will remain in the lineup and also include G10, micarta, & ( D2 ) :) Just day dreamin again I guess.

AWESOME!!!! Thanks Sal!

I actually like that the first set will be VG-10/FRN. The choice of economical (note, not cheap or low-performing) materials, plus use of existing tooling for the handles, etc., mean that this will likely come in at a price point where I can get several for myself and a few more for gifts. S30V, carbon fiber, G-10, or what have you would probably raise costs to where I could only get one or two. I love having a knife that's hard on the work, easy on the pocketbook.

Of course, Micarta is really, really nice..... :D

If you've never held a micarta Calypso in your hand before, your really doing a diservice to your hand :D
This thing is sweet (the fact it slices like a razor doesn't hurt either :p ).

I'm so thankful that they're being re-released that I hesitate to say this, but I will anyway. I would think that the mass market would be more interested in an interesting color FRN rather than bland gray. Just my uninformed opinion. Of course, that's probably why Sal runs a knife company and I don't. I'd be buying them no matter the color.
