hello can any one explain why benchmade has replaced a perfectly good griptillian folder with some thin bladed hollow ground sissy knife:mad: . Some body got into the special stash.

sorry bout the smilie won't happen again

it's the new ones with the round holes. only sissies want efficient cutters, especially with half length liners in plastic handles, where extra thick blades really shine at prying. :D

They are discontinuing the oval/thumbstud/flat grind full-size Griptilian line?

I though they were making them both?

Crap. The 550 is one of my favorite knives.

It's good that you can still use the one that you have right?

If you don't like the new design vote with your wallet and buy something that you like, the disign WILL follow the profits.

hey! I just got yelled at for the green smilie can't use them here the grip with the thumb stud is still in production

As I understand it hollow ground is better for slicing and cutting but flat ground provides better lateral strength. It's not like it really matters that much though, you wouldn't want to use a griptilian to pry with anyway.

And if the flat ground one is sharp I'm sure it'll still cut real nice.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong plz.

You hear that hollow grinds are supposedly better at slicing, but the reality is edge angle and blade thickness have more to do with it. I have used thin flat ground blades that cut a lot easier than some hollow ground hunters.

Another part of the mix is how high up you let the cut material ride the blade. Cardboard boxes often get up into the wedge above the hollow grind and cause sticking, as will other materials. The change may have been economics for BM - flat grinds are a little more expensive and less showy.

I like flat-grinds and hollow-grinds, so that's no problem.

But I sure will not miss that lousy oval-hole!

I know I am sorry to see the 550 go, I bought one for my dad and planned to get one for myself eventually.

Good luck finding one of the older model Griptillians. Sorry the newer ones don't float your boat.

You might want to check out Spyderco's D'Allara Drop Point. Yeah, round hole and hollow-ground (but the hole is unchamfered), but very beefy (full steel liners) and has nice wire pocket clip and strongly textured grip.
