Ok...I have never had this happen with my kitchen blades before, but my knife is showing spots of rust, see pics. Is this because of hard water or something? what can I do to prevent this from happening in the future?

Sorry for the crummy pics. I don't have access to a very good camera right now.

Is this knife new to you? Looks like high carbon steel mixed with water resulting in rust to me. Did it end up in a dishwasher by chance? That'll do it to carbon steel too. 0000 steel wool and some light oil will clean off the rust if you are careful.

Camelia oil is used a lot as a protective layer to prevent rust but is usually only used if you plan to not use the knife regularly.

To remove that, steel wool and oil will work. Also try something like Flitz and a Scotchbrite pad.

Thanks, y'all. It hasn't hit the dishwasher that I know of, but it just has those little spots of rust all over it. I will pick up some steel wool later.
