is the price diferance between the profetional and the apex worth it? or should i just go with the apex and get the stone upgrade?

I get excellent results with the Apex. I'm interested in trying out the Professional to compare the two (there will be a pass-around for a Pro model starting soon), but I think for the average knife knut, the Apex is plenty good enough. I think it's mainly a concern of durability, the aluminum of the Pro should last longer than the ABS of the Apex. My Apex is still going strong after 4 years, the only problem I have is that the suction cups don't hold very well anymore. I'm sure Ben will replace them for me, I just haven't gotten around to e-mailing him about it yet.

The main difference between the 2 is that the professional will sharpen larger knives & other tools. It's built heavier too, but my Apex works great for all my fixed blade & folding knives. Unless you're gonna start sharpening for a living, the Apex is a great choice & lasts for years. Just be sure to get the stone upgrade kit & video. It's easier to use than it looks & puts better than factory looking edges on anything.

I own the Apex, love the system, but in the back of my mind I'll always think, I should have waited and saved a little more to buy the Pro.

Reasoning is like my dad always told me, "Buy the best you can afford."

Either way ya can't lose, and if ya decide to sell it on E-Bay, it'll fetch 75% to 80% of the original cost.

The Apex works great and edge Pro is great to deal with. Order direct from them to get the exact stones to fit your needs. Also get the video.

Can the EdgePro Professional handle my 2 pound Mineral Mountain Cane Cutter with a 16" cutting edge? Because if it can, its what I need.

Hey Road Runner,

Put me on the list for the pass-around when you get it going. I would definitely be interested in checking it out.

The Apex or Pro model will handle this blade no problem.

However that said, it would be nice to fabricate a temp support that could steady the blade. Remember that the table the blade rests on is only 3 inches wide so if I was sharpening this item ( ? )it would really help to have so additional support.

The legnth of the blade isn't a problem for the Apex, if your arm is long enough to draw it across the table, The Apex is man enough to sharpen it.

As far as I remember the man difference between the Apex and Pro are :
1) The pro has a sturdy'er construction, although the Apex is pleanty sturdy enough for me.
2) The Apex folds down into a smaller package for easier transport.
3) The Pro is able to sharpen slightly wider blades than the Apex. The Apex tops out at about 3.5" wide wheras the Pro can go an inch or two wider. Only really an issue if you plan to sharpen cleavers.
4) The Pro makes more use of the full length of the stone, and so sharpens a might faster and doesn't require the stones to be "flattened" so often. If memory serves correct it is because the Pro has a spring loaded bed at one end so the sharpening stroke starts before the stone.
5) The Pro lets you alter the angle of the whole rig so you can taylor it to suit your height. Hence more comfortable when using it for a long time.

If you get the Apex, most definately get the stone upgrade kit and the video, both are well worth it.

Actually, the length is a consideration.

If the edge pro can't draw across in one stroke, the edge sharpness won't be consistent.

Does anyone have a Edgepro Prof-essional rig? Can it handle a 16" blade?

Just got a reply email from the nice folks at edgepro. Apparently people are sharpening swords on them, so I guess that answers my question.:)

Whoa!
This is better than I thought.

Kurt, Did you have to do anything special for the Apex to handle the 18" ?
