I want to buy an all purpose knife...should i buy a ka-bar 1211 or a cold steel recon tanto, i dont know the new recon tanto made from Aus-8 it is as strong as the older made of CarbonV?
i know that recon tanto is stronger than a ka-bar but i like the butt cap on kbar....1095 is probably easy to sharpen.the edge on the recon tanto is very thick so its not the best slicer around.i will not use my knife like a prybar.i have to make a choice...i want a knife with 7 inches blade for around $50 + shipping...if you have a better knife in mind please let me know what would you buy for this price.thanks

Own both, prefer the Kabar for reasons you already mentioned---it cuts better, has a thinner blade and shallower grind.

The Recon Tanto is more of a sharpened crowbar---thicker stock, shorter, steeper grind. Also have grown to dislike tanto points and/or kraton handles on any knife. FWIW, mine is an older Carbon V one, not AUS-8.

That said, I don't really like either design all that much. Prefer my field/hunting knifes to be smaller 3-5" blades and chopping ones to be larger. For me, 6-8" blades have little use outside the kitchen.

RC-4 nice knife but its not what i want. i want a 7 inches blade knife for around $75 shipped. i had place en order for a Ka-bar 1211 its the second time i bought this knife.the first time i had give the knife to a friend.
thanks !

you can get an RC4 for ~100$, well worth the cash imho. Great knife, great warranty, great people.

however, if $$$ is an issue, have you considered carbon Mora's? You can get a 550 Mora for ~10$.

here a list of the knives i had own: SOG:seal knife 2000,seal pup,seal pup elite,gov-tac,government agent.Cold Steel:recon tanto carbon V (x3),SRK carbon V,pendeton mini hunter aus-8,UWK 4116 krupp stainless (x3).KA-BAR:USMC (x2) & 1211 (x2)BUCK:119 (x4),120,nighthawk,110 AG s30v,regular110,buck#55.Ontario,spec plus marine combat.Junglee,special forces.Camillus marine combat,western ww49.Mora one red handle & one yellow handle.-2 old Solingen germany knife.Opinel #4,#5.many machetes.and finally a bunch of crapy chinese knives. in the next month i will buy a RAT RC-6 or RC-4 or maybe RC-3.

Becker is now with Kabar but will take time for the new stuff to come out. You can still find good stuff on ebay for the Becker line, especially the companion, and becker combat utility 7. Prices may be higher because Camillus no longer makes them and they were taken up quickly by collectors. Also, Kabar makes a good 7 inch or 9 inch heavy bowie in carbon steel, made in Taiwan, not Communist China, and I have heard good things about them, and best of all, they only cost about $50.

I own both. I prefer the Ka-Bar for cutting purposes, but the tanto is, as previously mentioned, like a crow bar, and sometimes you can use a knife like that too. Heck, maybe I'm spoiled, but they're both pretty inexpensive knives - why not get both?

Many knives are better suited for your use than the CS Recon Tanto.

The Ka-Bars are quite good. You don't have to spend a lot on a good
outdoor knife.

First off, Rat Cutlery are some great blades. Get the Ka-Bar. Not a fan of CS anymore.

What do you mean by the OP has been banned? Sorry, but I am not familiar with some of the terminology used on BF, please explain so I can be better informed. I will also check the site for explanations and rules of forums.

He (OP - Original poster was banned last night for a foul worded post in the General forum which is major trolling.)

That is no reason to not share the knowledge you have.

Trolls who attempt to degrade this community will come and go. Best we can do is feel sorry for them send them on their ways and enjoy the knives and friends we have and the knives and friends we are going to have.

Thanks for the info. I like to ask questions and learn from others, it is sad that we cannot learn from each other in a hobby will all love without being civil.

You hit the nail right on the head. That is why we are here and why most of us take this community seriously. We do not want people to degrade the information and friendships that are made. All you can do is feel sorry for the ones who do not understand that.

BTW. It will not be long before we start seeing the Becker knives again and I can not wait!
