I think the title says it all.

I have some good cigars and some good scotch, but I don't want to ruin either by a bad choice of mix.

What scotch would you recommend with cigars?

I saw that Dalmore 12 yr had a title like "Best Scotch to Enjoy With a Habano" but I would like your opinion.

Thanks

Tough call...

Each cigar maker blends their tobacco to produce different notes on the palette, and scotch and whiskey makers do the same. Add in the differences of each individual's taste buds and you can see the huge challenge you are posing. My personal favorite conbo would have to be Drew Estate Java Robustos paired with Wild Turkey Rare Breed. The coffee undertones of the Java just seem to pair up well with the smoky sweet tobacco tones of the Rare Breed. My favorite scotch (Johnny Walker Blue) calls for a different cigar but I stay with the same Maker. Acid Ltd. Def Sea pairs well with the Blue, it's slightly sweet fruit tones makes it a perfect chaser to the scotch.

Of course these are simply my preferences, your taste buds may lead you in a different direction entirely. I suggest buying a couple of bottles of your favorite bourbons and scotches and a selection of cigars and find your own favorite, it may take years but it is a worthwhile endeavor.

Thanks

I'm looking for directions, suggestions.

Once I have a few brands, I'll go to a local pub and try them, then buy the bottle. I won't buy something I didn't tried first. My college student budget doesn't allow it :)

Are Glenmorangie and Bruichladdich too sweet or subtle to match with cigars?

I don't wanna hijack the thread. But I'm curious as to what "other" people feel is a good cigar.

I've tried several. The only ones I can say I truly enjoyed were Kahulau(sp?) and a Punch Cafe Royale. The Kahulau, I know I'm spelling that wrong, was flavored...and while I liked it...I prefer to taste tobacco when I want tobacco...and liquor when I want liquor.

Anyways, I've not found anything <$4.00/each that is as good as that Punch. But I've probably one tried a dozen.

You can tell I'm a newb, and if you guys think that cigar is the pits that fine. Just kinda like to know if my "tasters" are heading the right direction or not:confused:

You need good peaty, muddy, dirty scotch for cigar-ing. Any Islay will do, but Laphroaig 15 is my favorite.

I'm not a cigar connoisseur but I was always partial to Haig & Haig Pinch 15yr old scotch when I drank it and smoked 'em; had it with some nice Cohiba's once and it matched well. Pinch is a good scotch that doesn't cost an arm and a leg; a smoother than J&B or Johnie Black .

I was thinking about Dalmore Cigar Malt, wich is made to take with cigars, anyone tried that mix?

La Gloria Cubana, Montecristo, Punch, Romeo y Julieta, Bolivar, Hoyo, etc., etc.

Yeah, skip the flavored cigars. If it's flavored then that generally means the tobacco isn't good enough to stand on its own. It pays to be a purist in some respects.

Any good brown liquor with a lot of body to it will pair up well enough. I like bourbon, scotch, or rum. Just make sure it has enough umph to stand up to the taste of the cigar. Generally speaking, the darker the liquor, the more body it'll have. Same for cigar wrappers too (painting with a broad brush, exceptions do apply). If you're smoking a claro or something that doesn't have as bold a flavor as say a maduro, you might choose a more mild bodied liquor or drink it with some water or soda. I usually like a good maduro with either a Guiness Extra Stout or a glass of Knob Creek.
