Wicked Edge - Amazing - Amazing....

After getting a pretty good look at one at the East Coast Custom Show last weekend - I took the plunge. Amazing. Just did over the ZT 550 i picked up - 100-1000 grit diamonds using a sharpie to see the progress @ 25 degrees and then 100 strokes with the two strops and paste. MIRROR POLISHED EDGE. I have been trying to get that for months. MIRROR. I can almost see myself in the smoothness. Anyhow, the Lansky and the Sharpmaker were good practice, but this thing is Carnegie Hall.... (Keeping the Sharpmaker in the kitchen tho - damn handy for the day to day knives) and even my wife enjoys it!).

Anyhow, just lobbing out the good review. Also, the seller threw in a granite base (by accident?)... very very cool....

Back to bed - victorious.

SharpMaker will do Mirror, just have to think out of the box.. This took me 30 minutes. From Profile, to mirror.

What I like about your new sharpener, is doing both sides at once. It is one sharpener, I do not own , yet.

I have S-Maker and like it but its the strop and paste phase that polished the mirror..... The "both sides at once" approach is like dancing... Its SO fast. From new profile to mirror about 7 mins on a ZT 550...

An excellent sharpening system, love mine. There's something addictive about that mirror polished edge.

It's my favorite sharpener. I could get similar results but it would take a LOT longer with regular stones or whatever else I was using. I have the pro pack 1; well worth the cost in my opinion.

Considering adding the ceramic hones to the kit one day.... Anyone have experience with Same?

I'm also a big fan of the Wicked Edge. It's the first system that I've owned that I can quickly and consistently get sharp, sharp blades.

I don't have the ceramic hones, but I do have the 800/1000 grit stones. I'm not obsessive about the edge, but once I hit 1000 and then use the strops, it's as sharp as I can imagine that I will ever need.

I will initially sharpen a new knife on the wicked edge, but they go to the sharpmaker extra fine rods and strop from then on. I have never used it to touch up a knife, just to set my first prefered profile. It is a very easy to use tool though for sure.

+1 This is basically my approach as well.

I'm not really convinced this is possible--in fact, I think that the only reason that you may have limited success in this is because your bevel is so small.

A few years ago, I pretty much exclusively used Spyderco ceramics (including the ultrafine rods) and the best I could do was this:

Here are a couple of pics my friend took while we were on vacation in the Outer Banks. I don't know much about photography, so all the credit goes to her.

I'm also impressed by how well the mirror edges showed up in the pics--it took a while to get those on there!

Hopefully I link these correctly (it's my first time posting pics).

Enjoy!

While these appear to be like a mirror, they aren't true mirrors in every direction. I've had better success nowadays using waterstones and strop compound (up to 0.5 micron diamond spray).

All of the edges shown, by the way, were done free hand.

Same here. I use it to reprofile and the Sharpmaker after that.

It took me a considerable amount of time to decide to shell out the money for mine but it was well worth it. I got it with the 50-1000 grit + 3 set of stropping stones which I think range from 14 microns down to .5 microns. I reprofiled my rift with it yesterday to 18 degrees with a 19.5 degree microbevel.

Either set of ceramics will go a long way to polishing out the bevel. The "Micro Fine" stones are similar to the Sharpmaker med/fine stones... but either set will "bridge the gap" between the diamond stones and leather strops, and leave you with a much better finish.
