Ok so I have the pro pack 1 and want to get ceramic stones. My question is can I just get the micro fine stones and use them after the 1000 grit stones without lapping the coarse side, or do I really need to get the super fine stones as well to get closer to the mirror finish I desire. I am wondering if ignoring the super fine stones and jumping right to the micro fine stones adds a huge amount of time to sharpening due to the larger gap in grits. I realize if you don't lap the micro coarse side that many recommend using that before the super fines and then the micro fine. This is what made me wonder if I could do without the super fines all together.

I recently did a test where I used the Micro Fine ceramics after a 600g stone. The edge has a start of a mirror finish, you can see a reflection in it, although you can still see the 600g scratches in the right light. So, using them after the 1000g stone, you should definitely see an improvement. My MicroFine-Coarse was lapped on a EEF DMT stone, BTW.

The more steps the better the finish, but you'll get a pretty decent finish going this route, followed perhaps with some leather stropping if you have it.

I would definitely strop after but I am really concerned about the super fines, ey are hard to find but I have heard so much about them being porous and powdery while using. I like spyderco ceramics which I hear the micro fine are like, too bad there isn't a superfine option made like them.

you could get the micro fines and, if you find that it is too big of a jump, tape some lapping film or fine grit (2000-3000) sandpaper to them. Would save you a bunch of money if you werent' planning on taking all of your knives to a mirror finish.

The micro fines are great, unlike the super fines.
Clay said the company that makes the stones for Spyderco also makes his micro fines. (CoorsTek)

My super fines cracked right through and edges and corners chipped away.
If you could get a replacement 1200/1600 made from the same ceramic as the micro's, I would buy them in a heartbeat.
