wicked edge propack 2 arms worth it?

ive already searched through the similar threads but the difference here is that i already have the low angle adapter for my propack 1 and i have an angle cube... basically what im wondering is are the arms worth the upgrade cost?

as far as angle difference, id only get down to 8 vs the 10 i have on the low angle add, so i doubt the two straight razors i have are worth dropping the cash on to accomodate them. i guess the more appropriate question is, has anyone noticed a drastic change in slop reduction and better performance in the upgrade vs the stock arms (low angles aside)?

thanks!

I always lacked confidence in the WEPS with the regular arms (I didn't use it much as a result). There are possible angle variations caused by the hinges at the bottom of the arms. A second variation is caused by slop in the arms' fit into the paddles. Even if the hinge variation is eliminated by inserting a washer or by holding it a certain way, the other problem was still there. It was also distracting to have to concentrate on holding the stones in a certain way while sharpening. The new arms solved that problem. I do recommend them.

Good sharpening,
Dave

I have the upgraded arms, and they are worth it IMO. However, I still would not recommend the WE to sharpen straight razors. I tried it, and ended up learning to hone on waterstones becasue there was still a little too much variance for my liking. (Applies to straight razors only)

thanks ernie... the WE is mainly for my kitchen blades and edc's... i do want to see what 8 degree sharpening looks like so ill give it a go on a cheapie straight razor, but ill take your word for it and not risk my nice one.

just as an update... I "tried" to do the cheapie straight razor. the blade is too small to get a decent stroke at that low of an angle without hitting the clamp with the stones... it's doable, but it would take me forever using such small strokes with the edge of the stone, and I'd imagine there would be a lot more slop doing so.

the upgraded arms are definitely worth it, if nothing else for the micro adjustment aspect. thanks again all.

I totally agree... WAY worth it. Less slop, more precision, which is always a good thing. Thanks for reporting back!

On a side note... I sharpen straight razors on my WEPS all the time. BUT I use a special mod that I had custom build from a local machine shop which puts the pivot base out in front of the base bar. The way Clay shows in his video w/ the old arms will produce a varying bevel - not good. I go up through the 10k choseras w/ mine and it turns out great, you just really need the mod and the technique. I do have some shapton 15k's on order... can't wait to take it to the next level :D

i'll take a pic of mine if you wish...

absolutley... thanks!

edit: i just watched the video you posted in the angle topic- nice setup!
