Wicked edge question (paper wheels)

I just ordered a wicked edge basic kit $275 one.
I was wondering if anyone tried an angle cell phone app? If so how dies it compare to the angle cube in accuracy?
Also I come from a belt sander paper wheel background. My thought was to set the bevel with the wicked edge up to 600 or so. Then finish the edge with the buffing paper wheel.
Anyone try this?
Thanks

I doubt your cell phone will provide the same level of accuracy that an angle cube would. The angle cube is a device made for doing precision work and purpose built for this. A smart phone is a gadget that has a bunch of things tossed into one device that just works, and generally not very well. Smart phones are a lot like SAK's they have a lot of available tools but they are for the most part pretty crappy in comparison to a dedicated version of the tool but they make up for it in the portability factor.

I wouldn't expect much from your cell phone except to give you a rough idea at best, it's just not made for precise work such as this. And comparison between what I get and what you get may not work well due to different cell phones and potentially different programs we use, versions of programs we use, etc.

Well I just downloaded Angle meter on my iphone and compared it to my angle cube and came out with a .55 difference in the angles. If you don't get the upgraded ball joint arms I don't think it will make that big of a difference. The nice thing about the angle cube is it will stick to your stones due to the magnets. I can't comment on the buffing wheel as I go to 1600 grit ceramics with my WE then jump to the 5/3.5 strops and go down to .5 finish most of the time.

Wow I am quite impressed, my phone and previous phone is a bit clunky when it comes to switching from portrait and landscape mode so I have low expectations. And I've been trying to download an angle program to test since I posted earlier but have had no luck.

Edited in:
It finally installed, seems to be more accurate than expected but I have nothing to compare it to so I am just eyeballing it. But it does notice my desk is slightly not level by 1 degree according to it which seems about right as one side is under an extra carpet for the chair and the other side isn't so it's propped up another 1/8in. Stacked 2 quarters and tried measuring the angle to desk, seems within reason of what I'd expect as well as a few other things.

I guess I have to retract most of what I said in my first post, this seems to be quite a bit more accurate than I expected. Though if you have anything to compare it to I would use that just to insure your angles are good.

If you just want to set the angle with the WE, I'd suggest cancelling the order! You can set the angle with a DMT Aligner, Lansky, or freehand for a lot less money. I'm speaking from experience. I don't use my WE since I became proficient with the paper wheels.

Good sharpening,
Dave

I can get a nice edge on the paper wheels/belt sander. However recently had a wake up when one of my knives had an extreme amount of metal removed from only about a year of use. I didnt even realize until it was compared with a new one. If the wicked edge can save me metal im gonna try it.

If that is the concern keep a sheet of paper with the angles that you set the knife at. And invest into a strop by either building or buying one to delay the time between sharpenings.

Though using a belt sander I can see a problem with how fast it removes metal. Free hand or manual guided sharpening system should be removing metal a lot slower and a lot less at a time. Enjoy your new sharpening setup I think you will be happy with it.
