after getting my computer up and going again, i cleaned up my desk and noticed little specs from the stones here and there on my desk and other things that were on my desk where i used the sharpener. My question is should i wear some type of dusk mask when using it? I've used it only a handful of times twice i had to work two of my little bros knives cause they had some good dings in the blade so i had to use the course for a bit. Just worried how much of the dust i've probably already inhaled. thanks for any input

I think you have more to worry about from a dream with your Avatar in it.
If it were a high speed grinder - maybe. The WEPS simply is not going to atomize or otherwise cause to go airborne particulate matter to be inhaled.

I sure hope the WEPS isn't able to atomize matter... but it's still capable of producing small particulate which may be carried by air currents and such. It may not have the flinging power of a grinder, but it will still produce metal bits and dust.

Alternatively, just buy an Edge Pro and enjoy some low-dust* waterstone swarf :D

*statement void if dust is present anyways :D

If you're using a grinder, there is a concern about metal getting into your pulmonary system. A respirator should be used when doing multiple knives this way. With a hand powered system, there is no issue. Metal will not go airborne enough to matter. If you're still scared, use water with those diamond stones on the WEPS. No chance then... :)

I'm not saying I would do it but Rick Hinderer stands in front of a belt grinder and grinds blades (not edges). Been doing it for years. He has a down draft vac but... still, no respirator.
Seems to be doing fine.
The WEPS is a very "gentle" beast by comparison.
