What's a quick easy way to secure the wicked edge without any big tools. I just got mine today and my base won't be here until next week I just need something quick and easy for now to try it out. Thanks!

Thanks guys, and how much better of an edge do you get with the 800/1000 stones because I only have the 600 and am thinking of upgrading

600 grit is going to leave you with a nice "toothy" edge. IMO, that's going to be good enough for most cutting tasks. I usually only sharpen until 600 for kitchen knives and beater knives. I use 800 and 1000 for my super steel knives (M390, etc.).

There is no reason why you can't strop after a lower grit stone, it creates a more refined toothy edge. It's actually what I prefer doing with my knives.

For reference I usually use 2 norton economy combination stones a silicon carbide and india and than strop on paper with some cheap green compound. Produces pretty good results for me. I prefer the edges I get from these over working my way up to my EF DMT as I feel it is getting to the point where I start losing cutting performance as I find a more toothy edge works better for me.

Mounted mine on a scrap piece of MDF and I clamp it to my kitchen table with a C-clamp....Took about 15 mins to drill and mount.
