Wicked Edge scratches on edge help

Just bought a pro pack 1 WE system, and i used it on an old Kabar knife to test it out. However, after the 800/1000 grit and 5/3.5m strops, i seem to have lots of scratches still on the edge. I am using the scrubbing motion I saw SmokeEater908 do on youtube, not the fast cyclic motion that Clay does.

The knife is ridiculously sharp, however the edge does not look very pretty. Most WE edges look refined and has a nice uniform polish, but mine looks rough. Is this a case of stones not broken in yet or am I doing something wrong?

Thank you

These are probably scratches from the previous stones that have not been polished out enough and are revealed by the finer stones. So make sure that before you move on to a finer grit, you completely remove the scratch pastern from the previous stones. A good loupe (10X or so) will help to see what you are doing.

New stones also have a bit of a ”break-in" period... after about a dozen or so knives, they'll leave a more refined scratch pattern.

Hard to tell for sure... but those 'spots' along the edge make me think that you might be using a bit too much pressure... or areas where the previous grind marks haven't been removed.

I'm a fairly new WE users myself.

I had that same issue using the scrubbing motion. I've found that if I only go one direction - I don't get that result. It's slower but it looks better. It could be new stones as well as mentioned above.

Try it again but only go one direction. I prefer to pull the stones down - starting at the heel and progressing to the tip as the stone goes down. Pushing would work too. As would starting at the tip.

Also be sure to use a light touch. Use a very light touch with the higher grits. Let the stones do the work.

Another thing. If you don't have a jeweler's loupe - I'd get one. They are only a few dollars on Amazon. The one I have has 30X and 60X magnification and LED lights. It is very useful to see when all the scratches are gone. If you see a "spot" like that - keep going until it's gone.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Go on youtube and search for "Razor Edge Knives". He's got a really good explanation of what's going on and how to correct it.

Do you remember which video. I subscribe to Josh's channel and have watched quite a few but don't recall seeing the one you recommend. Any help?

Thank you all very much for the help. I will purchase a louge and watch Josh's videos. Much appreciated all

I don't recall which video I post this in but it looks like you just need to use more lateral/horizontal motions instead of vertical. This will fix the stuttered look you are getting.
