ill get straight to the point!

i have a WE and was wondering if i should get the 800/1000 grit stones for sharpening my pocket knives?
Currently I use up to the 600 for my kitchen knives.. which works great, but was thinking up to 1000 for pocket knives for edc... any suggestions..
as im a sharpening newbie so any advice would be helpful. thanks.

I would say yes. I do not have a WE system---yet but it sure is calling to me. I have a ceramic stone for my Gatco system that is about 1200. It makes a HUGE difference over the fine diamond hone.

I have the 800/1000 stones but honestly unless you are really fussy about polishing out scratch patterns they aren't necessary. Especially if you have the strops already.

Some would say that you can get a very nice aggressive cutter by stopping at the 600 and cleaning up a bit with strops.

That being said, I usually just touch up my knives by a few light passes with the 1000's and then strop. Don't feel like you are missing out on cutting ability without them though.

Thanks for all the responses... anybody else want to weigh in?

I sharpen wit the WE all the time. The investment in the 800/1k stones and the 5/3.5 leather or balsa strops cannot be underestimated. These bring your results to a new level. You already invested in one of the best systems available. You will not regret it!!

I concur with Never Dull, I have the 800/1Ks and the 5u/3.5u Leather strops, they make a big difference!

If you want to test out higher levels of refinement before springing for the real paddles, you can always play with it a bit by taping wet-or-dry to the 600 paddles and continuing to refine the edge from there. I certainly think the higher level of refinement is worth it!
