Well, I’ve waited through Black Friday and Cyber Monday but no sale in sight.
Do they ever go on sale?
It’s hard for me to justify such an expensive setup as I get a really good working edge on everything with my KOWS. Maybe the Work Sharp diamond belts get an even more refined edge on my S110v blade?
Maybe more time on the regular Work Sharp belts?
A decent discount would take me into WE-land.

At one time they(WE) offered discounts to those waiting for back orders.
One company offered a bit of an upgrade for the list price, but their(the dealers) reputation wasn't the best
Those are the only ones I have seen. Probably the best deal will be found on the exchange.
I love the system, but it isn't cheap-but then again neither are my knives, so this hasn't been a frugal hobby.

I looked at fixed angle sharpening systems for the better part of a year before I made my decision. I went with a KME and love it so far. The wicked edge as it sits is not crazy expensive but once you start adding stuff to it it’s insane. I have all the diamond stones, three kangaroo strops, and 4 Chosera stones for much much cheaper than just the basic WE setup with a couple stones.

Im looking at getting a KME to sharpen so spydercos, s90v, s30v, 204p. Would you mind sharing your exact set up and technique.
This will be my first adventure with a guided sharpener and super steels too.
I'm a little overwhelmed trying to figure it out.

Those are beautifully finished edges Chopsaki! But can they fight? (Sorry but I couldn’t resist a Gen. Patton type sentiment). Coincidentally, I am working on a Spyderco PM2 in S110V. Were they done on your KME?

Some good youtube videos to watch would be Dean-0 and knife crazy. I start with the diamonds and either match and even out the factory bevel, as All factory edges are uneven. Or I’ll set my angle cube and do a complete re-profile at a set angle. For complete reprofile I’ll start with the 50 grit to save time and go 100,140,300,600,1500 and strop. If going for a near mirror I’ll strop after 1500 with the 6micron then go to the 2k,3k,5k,10k Choseras then Strop with 3 and 1 micron kangaroo strops. I’m going to add the 1k Chosera and the .5 micron CBN emulsion to see if the progression will produce a better mirror.

If I bought it all over again I may just buy the lapping film kit for 125$ and jump right to those after the diamond stones and be done with it. As the Chosera you have to check your angle after each stone because they vary In thickness a little. BUT... most the time I stop at 1500 or use my worksharp ken onion to put a super sharp edge in a couple minutes on a workhorse blade/kitchen knives. This is my setup as it stands....

I have never seen a WE on sale EVER. I did purchase an Edge Pro Apex on sale from Knife Center a few years back. I have contemplated upgrading to a WE a few times, but considering the cost, and the fact that I get fantastic results on the EPA, I just can't justify the purchase.

I guess depending on what you wanted it would be an “upgrade” but all sharpening jigs have thier strengths and weaknesses. The edge pro is a great system.

Yea they were all done on the KME. I came soo close to buying a wicked edge but I would have had close to a grand into it easlily by now. The KME is like 160? With the basic diamond hones. Extra diamond Hones are only $25 and kangaroo strops about the same. So basically for under $400, around the cost of a bone stock WE you can get a decked out KME with the two extra corse stones for reprofileing, 2 extra kangaroo strops and the full lapping kit and be able to produce full mirror finishes.

The WE 200 (sport model) was on clearance at for $200 a few weeks back. I think it was blade hq.

You can get a Tormek T4 for less and all the brick & mortar sharpening guys have one of their models. I have the T4 but I will be looking to sell it in the near future and get either the T7 or T8. reason is that you can get a Japanese waterstone wheel for it and once I get the hang of it I am going to offer it as a service. There are YouTube vids that you can watch and get familiar with It. I had the KME for a year but really had no desire to spend 3-4 hours on one blade. The Tormek will re-profile a knife in about In about 15-20 minutes depending on the steel.

3-4hrs?!?! What the heck were you sharpening?

I had to reprofile an S30V because as usual the 2 sides did not match and of course I had to take it to 12000 grit ( I use wet/dry sandpaper ) which is about 1.5 microns and then I strop it on a block. That's probably why.

Thanks for all your advice. But reflecting back on all the missteps I’ve made trying to sharpen knives, I bit the $$$bullet on the Wicked Edge 130 system. I’m close to being Medicare eligible and I hope this is the last sharpening system I’ll feel the need/desire to get.

It’s looks simple to set up, easy to use, very accurate, has a small footprint and reeks of solid quality construction. I think it will keep me busy until at least all my blades are rehabbed/sharpened. Then I can do a favor for friends and family. And, I’m pretty sure I can gradually buy more stones and strops without endangering marital harmony.

Stay sharp my friends!

I have spent up to 3 hrs on a blade before but it was when I just got the system. If the bevel is way off or if the steel is super hard I’ll just use a belt to take off the excess then throw it on the jig. I rarely spend any more than an hour on a polish these days. Heck most the times I sharpen to 1500 grit max and strop. Most knives I can bust out in realative short order.

I'm doing the same these days but I do most of them on the Tormek. Amazing machine and I keep the KME as backup.

Are you referring to he Tormek Japanese waterstone? If so... it’s available for the T-4 also.
