I just sharpened my first good knife a BM 755 with M390 steel. AND I LOVE IT! As a machinist of 25 years I am kind of a perfectionist. I was not sure about all the reviews but I can tell you they are true. This thing works. I am looking foreward to getting all the stones (800 and up). The factory grind was uneven from side to side and front to back. I used 23 deg on each side and in about 40 min it was perfect.

Good for you! :D

Now..two things. First- why aren't you taking advantage of that lovely M390 and putting a 30 deg inclusive edge on that baby?

Second- pictures please! :D

The blade is so thick. If I went to 15 deg the edge would be huge. At 23 deg its like .060

There lies the problem with 99% of factory knives. The edge geometry sucks. I usually go 30 deg inclusive or less depending on the knife. They cut much better when the are not as thick as a hatchet.

I know what you mean though, you would have a huge bevel!

"Blade Thickness: 0.164"

Wow..that's 4.17 mm thick . Imagine the amount of material you'd have to remove to get it down to 30 deg inclusive. Time and diamond abrasives would probably be needed as well being it's M390.

Given the "superior cutting ability" of M390 as Benchmade puts it, why in the heck did they put that steel in this particular knife? I love the look of the knife, but damn that's counter-intuitive.

Edit: Okay- sort of answered my own question- it's design is touted as "overbuilt" and it looks like the reviews support that notion. And I suppose it is by the looks of it!

Congratulations! As a veteran machinist you will appreciate the precision of the Wicked Edge Sharpener. Good to hear!
When you are going for the other attachments, don't forget the ceramic hones and the strops...with them you can develop a super sharp edge with a mirror finish.
I went one step further and got some blank hones for the WE and on these I mount some strips of 3-M adhesives cut from the 8x10 inch sheets that are available. These adhesives go from 40 microns on down to 1 micron and when you strip off the protective paper, they stick very nicely to the blank hones.

All the best to you :D
