i was just wondering what is the best way to clean the stones. would running them under water be fine?

Careful with choosing a cleaner- I think most DMT stones use nickel as the diamond holding substrate, so make sure you use a gentle cleaner devoid of strong acids and bases... Dish soap and a scrub brush sound best in my opinion.
