I've been MIA for awhile (just been really busy), but a package arrived on my doorstep today, and I just had to jump online and share this with my HOG family! :D

Once the Battle Grade AK-47's landed, my brother and I got to talking about needing some nice sheaths for them. We talked a bit and decided we wanted leather, and things kind of snow-balled from there. :D

After seeing a new sheath design, and a Baldric-style "HaverStrap", we were sold (timing can be everything). I commissioned Chad Pirtle of PirtleMade to make us a couple of sheaths, and matching HaverStraps too.  As you can see, we went with black (pics of my brother's later once he has a chance to see it), and had Chad add a Shark Skin overlay for something a bit different. Chad asked if we'd like a bit of color and "bling", and we obliged, allowing him some creative freedom in the sheaths.

Without further ado, here are a few quick pics I snapped this evening after opening the box, just before the sun set.

And a close-up. The blue trim and "bling" really sets it off! (The blue shows up a bit off tint in these pics for some reason; it looks great in reality.)

You can also see the regular belt loop hangar that is included with the basic sheath on the right side of the metal loop. It has a nice nylon bushing sandwiched between the leather, so the clip swings nice and freely. I really like all the carry options that the HaverStrap will allow, but the basic belt loop is nice to have available too.

Anyway, I can't quite convey in words just how awesome this sheath system turned out!   Chad really knocked these outta the park! The Shark trim on the sheath and HaverStrap looks fantastic, and the build quality of sheath system is extremely high quality. If you haven't seen any of Chad's work for yourself, you're missing out on a great new leather crafter, and I highly recommend that you give him a try!

Once my brother gets a chance to check his out (he is out of town at the moment), I will get some pics posted of his. It's basically the same, but a different colored trim to match his AK.

Beautiful! That sheath looks mean!!! Cool rig too. Congrats and enjoy!

Great looking sheath!

Wow!!
That is killer, nice taste.
Good to see you around again, hopefully OP2W picks up again soon

Very Nice!! Looks Great!!

Wow!

Chad continues to impress with his designs and the quality of his work.

Is the sheath weighted near the end of the blade, or does that appear to be necessary? How does it hang with the AK47 in, and with the AK47 out?

Jared, thanks a ton for the feedback, and to everyone else as well. It's hard to come up with words to express how it feels to have my works so well received.

Yes, there are 5 holes punched in the end of the sheath, and I include 5 steel Chicago screw sets and washers so the end user can balance the sheath to their preferred angle. That said, my AK is Micarta and obviously this one is G-10 which is heavier and I did not account for that in the build. I am working with with him now on a proper solution and it won't be an issue on future G-10 builds. Ultimately I my goal is to have it hang about 20 degrees without screws installed.

I asked him to drill some holes in his G-10 scales to remove weight but he wasn't down with that idea :)

LOL, I'm pretty flexible, but that might be taking a little too far! :p ;)

After weighing the different BG AK's I have, I found that the G10 version has almost a whole once more weight in the handle versus the canvas micarta ones. Neither Chad nor I had really thought about that. Once I first sheathed the sword, it hit me like a Mack truck. D'oh! :foot:

Chad is a great guy, and we're working on ideas of how to remedy the issue. These things happen with custom builds, especially on early examples. No worries! :)

FWIW:

Tanker Gray with blue/black G10 - 30.85oz (874.9g), 0.195" thick

Black with black canvas - 29.92oz (848.4g), 0.191" thick

Desert Sage with tan canvas - 29.66oz (841.0g), 0.190" thick

My brother came by this evening and picked up his sheath. Unfortunately, it was already dark, so these less than ideal indoor pictures will have to suffice.

Group shot along with a black/black canvas for reference.

Just the pair. And what a pair!!!

I sorta wish they were both mine now... Awesome work Chad!!! Truly stunning!
