Wide grips on smaller Busse(kin) blades? Anyone had a custom job done?

Just interested to see if anyone ever sent in any of the smaller Busse(kin) blades for wider grips to be added ? And if so could you post some pic's?

I did a little whittling awhile ago and did some more today just to compare some of the smaller knives I have as per this pic ....

and I have used the S5LE similarly ....

and a SJTAC

I found that picking up a smaller knife for the delicate stuff after doing a bit of chopping to get the main logs done made me aware of how a small knife with a good sized grip felt a lot more comfortable and controlable in the hand for this sort of work. Probably more noticeable when stepping down from a large blade and grips and when your hands are a little numb and tired.

Of the ones I have the S5LE with the mudder grips has probably the largest sized grips for a nice small blade .... the RMD even felt a little undersized on the grip area in this task ... the SJTAC has pretty long grips but then so is the knife for delicate stuff .... the S5LE and the Woodlore in the first pic and the Ivory handled Hattori in the first pic felt the best to work with .... and all have wider grips ....

I have been to Knob Creek and tried a few of the Infi smaller knives such as the GW, AD and LMS and felt the grips a bit too small for me ....but quite liked the LMS blade for shape and size .... although has anyone got one with a wider grip? There was a knife producd with a large thick blade and consequently wider grips which was modelled on the LMS and I cannot remember it's name .... done in black paper I think .... I liked the look of the width of the grip but not the thickness of the blade .... so was just wondering if anyone has had some custom grips done for any of the above?

I was thinking on what models fall into the Infi + small blade + wide grips and could only come up with a Basic 5 other than the S5LE I already have. Any other contenders out there that I don't know ?

Hey Peter,

I asked Garth to give my Warden a "wide bottom" when I sent back my Warden and HOGFSH for matching handles...

Did somebody say custom? Just this old Basic 5 ... nice and thick, but it's only stag. :p

BTW, that's a beautiful matched pair, Stump!

Thanks for the pic's guys .... Stump that IS a great matching pair .... the GW looks just what I was thinking about ..... very practical ....

Will .... I love the reworked Basic 5 with Antler grips .... wow .... I would settle for a normal Basic 5 ..... but to have one like that is just icing on the cake .... Did you get that done by a Custom Maker or through the Custom Shop ??

I think teaming up a thin smaller knife with a larger one and going for good wide grips is a great way to make use of customising options ....

Thanks, Peter. Jerry thinned the blade out on that one for me a few years ago and cut the handle off the tang. Sent it to Dennis Riley for the guard, stag and pommel cap.

Hey Peter,

I am sure I am telling you absolutely nothing that you don't know but in the range you are looking at the Infi Scrapper4 has the exact same mudder grips as the S5, but feels more comfortable with a rounded choil, rounded polished spine, no thumb ramp and balance point between the index and middle fingers when choked up. I find it significantly easier on the hand for close work.

Being dual layer all the G-Rex grips are much thicker and that can be good, but at a price. The Scrapper4 has the Meaner Streets profile with a very slightly shorter clip and replacing the front talon hole with an enlarged choil so you pick up excellent choking ability, at least for me. And at a similar weight to a Game Warden.

And of course the SAR5 has much meatier grips than any of the other smaller Busses that I have held. Fair bit heavier than a S5 but might be worth thinking about.

Thanks sandgrouper ... the SS4 would be a knife I would pick up on the exchange if I could but they are not on often and quickly snapped up ... I don't check it often enough to catch them before they have gone ....

What I was thinking of was maybe sending in a request for a knife to the custom shop and sending in one I already have in the larger range and getting a set done like Stump Buster.

I have been trying a number of knives now for a while and think I can narrow down the Busse's I really like as I am conscious I have much duplication on some and it is difficult deciding what to take out ....

The KZ, the NMFBM, the BWM LE , my FSH Variant and my Basic 9's ...

For smaller knives I like the S5LE and the RMD and one day a Basic 5 but would love something in the 4 inch range which is a "Busse" in the traditional sense. I was thinking of asking if they might do me a 4 inch GW very similar to Stump Buster's blade but a little longer .... they might do and I can but ask ??

I can then sell off my others to bring in some money and settle down to having a great set of users .... ideally in a matching set of spec's on the handles .... anyway ... we will see what happens ....:D

Here's another Meaner with the G-Rex scales treatment

The blade is 0.17", and the handle is 0.95" thick.

Thanks for the spine shot RG ..... that is a great help .... they look pretty thick .... were they ever done in a single colour scheme ?

These Custom shop knives trickle out of the Shop for 'Ganzas and shows, so you never really know what one might find, or what has been made before.
