My wife had a nasty slip and fall while camera was around her neck and our camera was damaged badly, beyond repair. Oh, wife OK.

It was an older Canon G2 and I would like to replace it with something similar. The G2 is a step above a point/shoot but not an SLR.

Basically, looking in the $500 range, 10 mp, zoom, prefer German lens. I have the latest B & H catalog but would appreciate any feedback or recommendations.

The Nikon SLRs are super, I own a couple, but not "something similar" as Brizbane might be wanting.

Look at the Canon S Powershot cameras, they are a good step-up and you get a whole lot of point and shoot characteristics along with SLR features. A very quick shutter delay (the lag between shutter button and exposure). You can find them really cheap on eBay and Amazon- don't be afraid of reconditioned units. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/

I would question why anybody needs a 10meg other than pure marketing causing this desire. That high rez stuff is required when enlarging a small portion of the existing image, but an unlikely scenario. Most of us test out as being thrilled with the results of a five meg camera- and that puts a lot of used high-end gear under the $500 mark. I bought (another!) Canon S3is at Mallwart the other day for $110 on clearance- brand new.

A German lens? Okay, I'll bite. Why? Look at the Leica- they have some particular ones with German glass. http://us.leica-camera.com/photography/m_system/m8/

The Leicas and the cost of any German glass lens is likely to cause you to sue somebody... anybody... over that faulty sidewalk your otherwise graceful wife stumbled over!

And don't let her carry the new camera.

Check out the Cannon G9 and other cannons in that price range.

Have you looked at the Panasonic Lumix line with Leica designed lenses?

My Brother has recently bought a Leica D-Lux 4 which he loves, but the Panasonic Lumix LX3 is pretty much the same camera without the red spot and the price which would be my pick. dpreview picks it over the Canon G10.

The Canon G10 is an excellent camera and Cannon's top of the line non-SLR and seems to recieve almost universally positive reviews. It meets your specs for price and features, except for the "german" lens, but honestly the Canon lens is going to be as good as anything in that price range.

If you have your heart set on a "german" lens, the only thing I know would be something like the Leica C-Lux 3. Approximatly the same price, smaller camera (which is nice) but with less features and lower resolution (which is not). I guess you have to decide if those trade-offs are worth the nominal benefit of a "german" lens to you.

With the Leica you are paying a lot for the name (IMO at least) but I admit to being a long time Canon user so I may be biased. ;)

Good responses! I guess, after digesting this all, that the German lens isn't all that important and neither is the 10 mp. So now my parameters have changed a little and I will consider some of the others.
