. . . Shann's knife buying comes to an abrupt end

Oh well, it was overdue and she deserves it. I tried to talk her into something that got better gas mileage, but she absolutely had to have an SUV. I know you can't go wrong with Hondas, but nothings cheap anymore! She did get the basic level edition, no leather, etc., but they really load up the base models these days. Electric everything, power everything, air, AWD 255 hp 6 cylinder.

I didn't think she was going to pull the trigger until July, but there you go.

My wife just bought a glass stove top. We're having the kitchen redone. She wanted all new carpet throughout the house and then wanted to paint the walls afterwards!!! Yee gods!!!

We are getting a new landscape-architect designed patio and fire pit beginning next week. Concrete pavers, special massive flat top stones to sit around the fire on...new spruce trees, etc. Yee-gads that costs good money. I'll certainly enjoy the fire pit though. It gives me the opportunity to buy firewood again and we all know that firewood can use more splitting with khukuris. :D

My house is unkempt.

My vehicles are old.

I just got 4 “gaucho” knives from Argentina. Hand forged from carriage spring steel. Woven leather handles.

You could always tell her that she deserves it, and you are behind her 100% in getting the new job that will let her pay for it, as well as feeding your HIKV :D

We have a Honda Pilot....almost as much as rent........but worth every penny. We'll be filling it up completely in our trip to the Blade Show....8 people in one car....brings back the good-ole station-wagon days....yikes!....good thing it's family.... :(

Actually, she works very hard and makes very good money. But between the house renovations and the new car, I feel the pain! I'm just glad that I managed to get a dozen HI khuks and knives before this all happened.

Hey, Howard, where did you get them? Got any pix?

I'm afraid I'm becoming too upper middle class. Seriously. My goal in life was get an upstairs bathroom in my house. Now we've gone overboard with fancy renovations and are buying a new vehicle.

I bought a Honda CR/V at the end of Jan. My wife wanted to get a minivan, and we looked at the Sienna. I wanted to get another car, a Camry.
We compromised on the smaller Honda. It is larger inside than our older Camry, but gets better gas mileage than most minivans.
I drive about 24,000 miles each year and wanted to get better gas efficiency. Our old Ford Windstar got 20 mpg on the commute, and the warranty on the REPLACEMENT TRANNY was about to run out.

The Honda CR/V has been averaging about 25mpg. It gets about 26 or so on the commute and about 19-20 around town on short trips. It is not as comfortable as a car like the Camry, but better than a truck based SUV. It has some space in back, and the back seats flip/fold.
I know people who like the Toyota Highlander, but I figured that if I were going to spend that much, I'd just as soon have something much bigger - a minivan or a larger SUV - like the Pilot.
What sort of gas mileage has it been getting?

so far, my Pilot gets 21-23 mpg on long trips and about 19-20 around town.

My mileage is identical to Daniel's. Highway mileage is *very* dependent on wind direction and speed. It's hard to keep the tranny from downshifting to go up hills, my only beef is the non-existant manual transmission option. Then I really would have liked this Honda. Oh well...

That is better than I would have expected for something as big and heavy as the Pilot - with 4WD.

With the 4WD CR/V - the speed matters, as does local, stop and go driving. It doesn't do as well on gas in the winter in the snow. My commute is mostly 60-65 on local country 2 lane highways, with about 1/4 of the miles involving going low speed for 1 mile at a time, stopping at a stop sign, etc.

My 4 Cyl Camry (2001) gets 30mpg on trips to Chicago, and 26-28 on the commute.

the Pilot is Front Wheel Drive until it needs more power, then it's All-Wheel Drive...which is different than 4WD. Just wanted to clarify that - hence the decent gas mileage with 8 passengers. Even towing a full trailer with the car loaded with people - still got about 15 mpg.

The CR/V is also AWD. You still have the extra axle and that adds some drag and rolling resistance, even when you are in front wheel drive. Your mileage seems good for such a big and heavy truck. It is a little better than I used to get with the Ford minivan, and I know that it is better than people I know have been getting with a Caravan.

I've been busy and just got back to this thread.

Aardvark and Clearblue, E-bay, from a guy named cazubillaga. He has more. Here are some pictures of the ones I got.

Shann, you may not realize how good you have it. I've been batching it and playing the single parent for 4 years now. The hell of it is I'm remarried but the @#$%ing US government has exiled my wife from our home for the past 10 months. True, I don't have to worry about painting walls, sweeping floors, tidying up, remodeling, etc. But the woman's touch that comes along with that I do find myself missing.

They sure resemble standard kitchen cutlery.

IRTT:
I've always owned Honda and have them serviced at a shop that only works on Honda/Toyota. Their reliablity and durability are legendary.
I once got 52 MPG on a trip to Portland in my '92 Civic. Never duplicated it but have gotten 47 several times. My average tankful gets me 40.
Hope she likes the new Pilot. She will probably have it for the next ten years.

I'm glad to see at least that she made a good choice, she's pretty smart (Hey she married me didn't she  ). She put about 200 miles on it on Saturday and said it "drove like a dream". Her parents have an Odyssey (sp?) that they drive back and forth from VT to Fla several times a year and its bulletproof.

My wife and I bought a Highlander in April 2001, before the Pilots came out. No complaints whatsoever. We had two Explorers before that, a 92 and a 95 and said: "Enough!" You'd have thought that I would have learned after the first Explorer, but noooooo . . .

I don't think anyone can go wrong with either the Pilot or the Highlander.

Edit to add: Just glad mine's paid for! :D
