She was opening a kid's toy (packaged like fort knox) and she slipped and stabbed the inside of her finger closest to the hand. Surgery and 6 weeks without use of her left hand. I am on FT dad duty with an 18 month old and a 5 year old, two dogs as well. No more knives for her....

Sorry about her accident! Good luck to her and you and keep us posted :(

That sucks. Happened to 2 other friends of mine. Both were in a soap filled sink. Chef's knife. The other, a blade from a food processor. We have a strict rule in our house. No knives in the sink or drying rack. Scary stuff.

Sorry to hear that.....
Tell her to play with you instead...,i'll be "safer" for her
Good luck and a soon recovery for her.

OOoohh, man. I didn't even want to click on this thread when I saw the title. Smoke and prayers for a speedy recovery. Enjoy the time with your kiddies and dogs. And take good care of your wifey.

I had the same injury on the right hand with a scalpel...20 years ago and mine is still as good as new; figure in the last 20 years some improvements have been made in surgical technique and rehab so other than being out of commission for a bit...well, good luck.

I wish your wife a speedy recovery especially in light of your personal situation but broken bones heal faster. I tore the bicept ligament off the inside of my elbow bone ( lifting ) a couple months ago which required reattachment surgery. I still have a long way to go with physical therapy.

Hmm, it would be a good idea to limit her to scissors from now on!

The plastic kind they have in pre-school. :D

I hear you on the kids toys. I'm usually on packaging detail at Christmas time and some of those toys are packed as if they weren't meant to be played with.

It could happen to anyone. Call it a hard lesson learned. Hope she has a full and speedy recovery.

that sucks, I have banned my girl from using, cleaning or even touching my kitchen knives. I've noticed that they always need sharpening after she uses them.
Watching her use a knife scares me, I've tried to teach her the correct techniques but some people just dont want to learn.

This rule applies at my house also. And this also prevents them from bending the tips on my expensive chef knives. :)

Sorry to hear about that, it really sucks to be cut. My recommendation is to get her a nice pair of EMT shears as they will cut through almost anything.

My mother has been to the ER for stitches so many times. Kitchen knives, once for a nasty cut from a broken glass in the sink in soapy water.

I have had my fair share of stitches from knives as well. Last one severed a nerve in my right (dominant) hand thumb. Still numb after a couple of years, but at least it still works!

Bummer. Hope her hand recovers.

She probably won't be too receptive to advice on safe cutting techniques!

That must suck...

It's been 1 week tomorrow since my last cut- an antique sickle got me real good on the thumb- wrapped it and duct tape and moved on... Proubly shoulda got stitches, Realized that after soaking through 3layers of tape- live and learn right? :D

Thanks for all the well wishes. Funny thing is, the same knife got me really good in my left index finger too, at the knuckle. I was cutting a cable tie at a weird angle (kind of bent over inside a multi media cabinet not designed for adults to be mucking around in) while using my left hand to brace myself. The knife cut the cable tie and proceeded to stab that knuckle. I never got medical attention for it but I think I did something to my tendon as well. My brother in law was around when I told my wife i'm getting rod of the knife. He now has it knowing full well it has gotten both of us. I warned him to be careful haha!

If your wife is anything like mine, her cutting her finger was all your fault. Hope she heals quickly!

those chinese packaged toys can be almost impossible to remove from packaging without jeopardizing your health, if not from a sharp instrument, then from the jagged plastic corners.
