My wife got a Costco card. What should we buy? A pallet of paper towel? A crate of canned goods? A truckload of tuna?

I am in the market for a new HDTV for our new addition. Are the prices there better than for example, WalMart?

I have heard that the meat is pretty good, and we do have a freezer.

Costco has a nice selection of better quality merchandise. You really can't go very wrong with anything you buy. The meat is very good as is some of the seafood. My little joke is sometimes they have nice EDC products (Leatherman multi-tools were common a few years back). If you need prescription glasses, that service is also very good and lower price.

New to the forum, but an old timer at Costco.

Happy New Year

Jack

Thanks. And welcome to the "club". We have a good time here (most of the time!)

The meat is good and cheap. Some fruit and vegetables are cheap. Bulk coffee is cheap too. Batteries are cheap. If you eat healthy they stock some bulk health foods much cheaper than the regular stores. It's mostly good to be honest. Some things aren't so cheap but all shops try to catch you out like that.

You're generally buying bulk though so make sure you have storage space. The bill at the checkout is usually pretty hairy too, but you are buying 3 months worth of stuff.

Diapers, wipes and formula.
electronics, dog food.
allergy medicine.
those are the items we purchase most of.

The best part is, there is a cabelas across the street!

We have been Costco members for over 15 years. My only advice is to taste those samples at least 3 times. For some reason, the products almost never taste the same
when you get them home.

We get our glasses and I get my hearing aid and batteries there. We also get our paper products there. My wife usually buys gas there.

We needed a new TV and looked at Costco. Then we went to Best Buy. The prices were about the same, but Best Buy delivered, set up and hauled away the old set.
Costco or Walmart don't do that.

Cakes in the bakery are a great deal for all the birthdays and other events where the cakes need to taste good. The bulk coffees as someone said. They were part of helping setup a steady market for Rwandan coffee and those folks sure needed something for getting their economy back up. Lots of good choices otherwise in popular brands. Over the counter allergy meds in their Kirkland brand is a super deal. Plus when you are done the lunch counter has some decent pizza and other tasty items for super cheap.

Alcoholic beverages, ours even has a good selection of craft and imported beer.

Their return policy is great!

That is true. I bought a $1000 in the ear hearing aid that just wouldn't work for me. After sending it back to the manufacturer 3 times, I had enough. I took it
back and they refunded every penny with no hassle. I got one of the behind the ear aids and it's much better.

BTW, when I got the hearing aid, the customer service rep suggested that we get the executive AMEX card. It cost $100 a year and we immediately got a $100
rebate, so it was free the first year. Since then we try to use the card for everything. It costs $100 a year, but we get a $200 to $350 check from Costco every
year.

Been a member for a few years up here in Toronto. Gas is usually near 9-10 cents cheaper per litre, full synthetic oil changes cost about $54 or $64 after tax (most other places I went to before cost just over $100).
Their no questions asked return policy is great. While they may not deliver and pick up your old TV, if anything happens to it they'll probably exchange or refund it no problems.
As someone else mentioned, their toilet paper is great and at a really good price. I don't know about in the US but up here their baby wipes and I think a lot of their Kirkland paper products (diapers, wipes, etc) are made by Kimberly-Clark, the same Co that makes Huggies diapers, etc.
Good prices on Gift Cards.

Long time Costco member. +1 on the AmEx card, gas, paper goods, electronics, coffee, cereal, fruit & vegetables, etc. We buy everything we can there because they have consistently had better quality AND lower prices. They have some men's dress shirts for $17.99 that are very nice. The Kirkland brand athletic socks are pretty good, too. Anything you don't like gets a no questions asked refund. Electronics also get a "concierge" (free tech support) service that can be pretty helpful- they will even call the manufacturer for you if they need to.

If you like oatmeal check out Coaches Oats. In the summer they have some ice cream that is just ridiculously good. Their pies, especially pumpkin and apple, are good. It was a good move on your wife's part, but you do have to have some self control, cause you can definitely spend some money there.

and if you are NOT a healthy eater.... you can get a hot dog, coke, slice of pizza and a frozen yogurt for under $5..... I get gift cards there, they are always less than face value!

Managed to resist their pizza for three or four years now, I don't know how much longer I can hold out though... It's a trial each time I visit

Some of the clothes are cheap if you aren't too picky
