Wife needs a long, narrow bladed knife to use to cut away "pseudo bulbs" on her orchids. She is currently using a filet knife, but would like for the blade to bend in the other direction - like a hawk bill. It needs to be long (8" or so) to get through the dirt down almost to the root level. It also needs to be narrow (1" or so) so as not to disturb other orchids. Not interested in a high priced knife, but looking for something <$50.

Not hung up on country of origin and, although fixed would be preferred, an easily opened folder would be fine. She used my Mora today and liked it, but found the length to be too short. So, any ideas?

TIA. :)

The best tools I've found for working on roots was a decent, sharp, set of long-handled bandage scissors and a pair of lexan scissors. Knives have a tendency to damage roots you don't want to touch (which is a point where they'll rot and/or get soft), unlike scissors which can be used with a lot more precision in tight spaces between the roots.

Just do a quick google search for bandage scissors to see what I'm talking about. Lexan scissors are very similar to some surgical scissors with blunted tips, short blades, and long handles.

Thank you! She is going to look at that as well. But she also had me change the wording of my OP. Since I know nothing about plant work, I misled you in the original post through my ignorance of what she really needed. I have since changed the wording at her direction to better explain her needs. But she is very interested in the idea of using the bandage scissors as well. We will look into that. :)

Spyderco Tasman Salt is a hawkbill in H1 rust proof steel in either plain edge or full serrated.
Might do the trick.
