So i bought a bk5 from the forums with every intention of it being a gift to my wife as a kick butt kitchen knife.... Well the knife showed up today and my wife wasn't home when it did so as you might have guessed i opened it and started messing around with it...after about 10 or 15 mins i started to realise exactly how well this knife was preforming some basic bushcraft tasks. As i spent more time with it i was more amazed at how well it did. It cuts almost as well as my mother in laws tongue .... Pretty darn impressive! And it's design lends very well to a wide variety of task's... Only draw back i see is batoning with it will be very inefficient due to the top design which isn't a big issue for me also chopping with it could be a challenge. I didn't get as much time to fool around with it as i liked but i was impressed to say the least. I did want to but didn't get a chance to try batoning and chopping.

So my question is how well does this blade handle those two tasks? Any of the bk5 fans out there have some input/experience with this blade with regards to batoning and chopping i would love to hear it as i am planning a hike in a couple weeks and would like to know if the bk5 is going or staying home. If it chops and batons ok then i will vertainly carry it with me.... either way wifey is sol as she is not getting her hands on it as this one is all mine lol

Cheers

The 5 is the Sleeper of the Becker line. It hits WAY above its weight, and you can still baton with it just fine. Take it into the woods and wear it out, you will see what I mean. Its one of my favorites.

You'd be surprised by it I'm sure! At I believe one of the gatherings the tip of a 5 hit a concrete floor. As anyone knows thin tip= weak tip, lo and behold though, the knife came out victorious against concrete and there was either a 1/4 inch or a 1/2 inch divot in the concrete where the knife hit.

So, yes, it can be batoned. It is not it's forte'. But in a pinch, it will work & work well. BK&T ROCKS !!! :D

Thanks for the input guys.... Can't wait to beat the snot out of it on the trip....would like to say to Mr Becker thanks for all the wicked blade designs and thanks to my wifey for forgoving my about keeping the 5.

there is an ultra magnum camp thread. mmm. not sure where that could be :D

I can't imagine picking up a BK-5 and not immediately falling in love. It's one of the very few designs out there that does exactly what a knife is supposed to do with no bells and no whistles.
Hmmmmm, I can easily pictue a special edition 5 with bells and whistles...

as i'm sure many others will chime in (tl;dr), the BK10 SE was the only Becker i know of that came with bells and whistles :D

It's true, we got bells and whistles with those.

OP, good on you for finding a new love in the BK5! It is a heck of a knife, and will do just about anything you could ever need it to.
