ok ok, maybe I am too old for this.

but I came across this site:

http://www.wickedlasers.com

ok, maybe its just my igorance, but I never knew lasers could make a beam. I always thought that it has to hit a wall or something and it makes a dot.

are those lasers actually capable? are they safe to have for fun?:p

mike

Anything above 5mw will be very dangerous to eyesight. I have a green laser that can light a match at 3' and pop balloons at about 12'.
My laser does give a very nice green beam and can light up a room with a nice green glow when pointed at the ceiling.
If you would like to learn more on the safety of lasers have a look through www.laserpointerforums.com.

They are lots of fun but need respect.

I have a 5mw GREEN laser pointer that will show a beam at night outside. It illuminates moisture and dust in the air.

I had a Lucent Optics 120mw laser for a short time. It was scary. I have enough problems with my eyes and didn't need more.

The human eye is much more sensitive to green then red. That's why a green laser looks so bright.

If you decide to get a green laser pointer, spend a bit more for it. The really cheap ones may not have infared (IR) filtering and that is really dangerous.

Here's a link if you want to learn more about lasers.

thanks for the input guys, but if you point it at your ceiling,mightn\'t it start a fire? espcially if your house is made of wood.

Uffda, where can I get a decent laser that can create a green beam?

thanks,

mike

mightn\'t it start a fire?

No. I suspect some of the laser pointers on the market could damage your eyes, but they're nowhere near powerful enough to set anything on fire.

There are a few that are industrial strength and they will cost correspondingly.
You won't pick them up for less then a thousand, I'm sure.

Keep in mind that
HOMELAND SECURITY is watching you
and shining your new green wienie at the stars will probably get you investigated by the FAA (or Canadian equivalent) :D

I bought one of those Radio Shack green lasers for sky-pointing. It's 5 mW and cost me 50 bucks. Is that considered a decent one for the money? It uses 2 AAA bateries.

I think all the simple models use 2 AAAs. $50 is a good low price.
It should hold up well enough for teasing the cat and panicking the neighbors. :)

haha cool!

thanks guys and Esav.

so from the site it basically means that any laser that is green will have a lightsaber effect. am i correct?

I gotta get one of those blue lasers that can reach from here to Canada ... grrr :grumpy:

Of course it's legal. Just use it responsibly.

No lighting up low-flying planes.
No shining it in drivers' eyes.

It's fun indoors in absolute darkness because you can see the beam through the air, not just as a dot on the wall.
But be careful what you light up because shiny metal or a mirror can throw the beam right back at your eyes, which is not good.

thanks Esav for the advice. Its good to know if im in my room and it wont light up my wooden house.

I was going to recommend the Leadlite GLP-105, but you got a pretty good deal. That's about what I paid for mine with S&H. Spend a little more and get some lithium batteries for it. They do make a differance.

Don't be tempted to jack up the power. Most of the 5mw pointers have limiters that keep the power within specs. Some can be jacked up to around 50mw, but it won't last long.

If you have ever messed around with red laser pointers, you will be surprised at how bright the green laser is. It lights up a dark room enough to read by.

Take a look at some of the laser forums. There is a lot of good info there.

It's not a lightsaber like you're thinking. It's a plastic tube that the laser shines into. But they're pretty good, yeah. Just expensive.
