Wild Basin Hike

This weekend I got a chance to go for a little 7 mile hike in Wild Basin, which is in the southern portion of RMNP. Normally there are a number of water falls and cascades in this area, but as you can see in the photos most of them are frozen up pretty solid on the surface, even though there is water flowing noisily underneath. Part of the attraction of this hike are the views of the southern side of Long's Peak (the opposite side from other photos you've seen me post lately).

Of course, I had to bring along a few blades. So, the Gunny and Shugart-n-Gordon came along for the hike. I don't bring a folder (beside a SAK Fieldmaster) on many hikes anymore, but I do like to have two blades and I haven't got my new daypack set up yet with a blade mounted to it, so the Barkie was on my belt and the Strider in the pocket.

Beautiful scenery... thanks for posting! I love those mountain views (don't see many hills here on the prairies) :)

I'm just a few hours north of you, in Manitoba. Still waiting for winter to really hit here!

I head back to Minnesota tomorrow from Colorado, so, with my luck, you can expect winter to really hit sometime in the middle of this week:(

Hell yes!!! Ice!!! I can't wait any more to strap on my crampons and ice axes and start bashing ice cascades like a freaking caveman... I am so jealous...

Very nice thanks. Is it possible to find any game animals in the area at this time of the year? Which ones? Thanks... Coote.

Oh yes, lots of elk and mule deer. In fact, they are easier to find now, because the colder weather and snow at the higher elevations drives them down into the valleys, where they are more readily visible.
