In the last few days, I've had lots of luck with my foraging. Reason#1: RASPBERRIES!

Here are some fine black raspberries, ready to drop.

The darkest ones, a deep purple, seem to fall at the slightest touch. The less-than-ripe ones I left for another day.

The day's harvest. Mostly black raspberries, with a few red raspberries too. The red ones have larger segments, and seem to fall apart easily. These are very, very tasty. :)

Not sure what kind of berries these are. They tasted funny, but were nice and warm. :D

Embryonic wine! I'll have to wait a while to pick these grapes, but hopefully I'll be able to make wine for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

A feral apple tree in our local woods area. Must have escaped from a local farm.

And what appears to be a pear tree, just across the field from the apple tree.

No wonder the deer are so fat and happy.

Next, some milkweed. I've been meaning to harvest some for a while. Apparently, the common notion that they are "bitter" is incorrect. Just a little boiling, and they're reportedly quite good. The idea started back in the 1960s with the author of "Stalking the Wild Asparagus," who may have confused milkweed with dogbane, which is quite bitter. Apparently, other authors just copied him. (also notice the grapevine in the background.)

Egads! What manner of beast hath trod this earth?

Staghorn Sumac.

Here's the sumac cones I took home. I let them steep in cold water, strained it through a stocking, and made some sumac-ade. Not bad! It's supposed to be tart and lemony, but my experience was less so. Next time I'll go for bigger, riper berry cones.

And now the parting shot.
"Summer lovin', had me a blast..."

Cool pictures! My grandma has an old apple patch that don't taste too sweet when ate like one from the market, but bake up really nice in some apple crisp our apple sauce! I made one last week that was delicious

Also, let's keep this forum family oriented (see last pic) :p

Cool!

I just came inside with a hat full of black rasberries from the bushes around my yard. It's pickin' time! (I'll be picking seeds out of my teeth all day tomorrow... wish there were such as thing as wild seedless blackberries.)

Stay sharp,

I love the raspberries, I just collected a couple of cups earlier today. They will go great with the perch that I am having for dinner today.

Cool pics, wild edibles are some of the best threads, IMO.

That hoof print looks like a shoed horse to me... I could be wrong.

You're exactly right, Lee. The area I was in is popular for horseback riding. Gotta keep an eye out, make sure I don't step in their, um, leavings.;)
