Hello everyone
Im looking for wilderness areas that are not within state and national parks, nor are considered wildlife refuges or conservation areas or protected by state or national laws.
the reason i ask of you this question is that im looking for virgin wilderness land that has no laws on it to practice my shelter skills, as well as other survival skills on a long term basis. where i could hunt for fish, do some traping, and build a true shelter made of natural elements.
Where in california can i go to do all this? Do you know where one can go into the wild deep deep deep into the bush and do all this?
I just want to live off the land on a temperal basis. No Canis Lupus Domesticus involved here.

thanks

You're going to have a very hard time doing that legally in Calif. because of limitations on hunting seasons, fishing seasons, trapping, etc. In fact, it would take some serious work to find a location anywhere that would legally accomodate all those activities at the same time. That said, I've spent some time in remote corners of the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories, and Alaska where the seasons were pretty liberal and supervision fairly flexible. Nonetheless, you really need to focus on complying with the law because many jurisdictions are very serious about poaching---as they should be. It makes it hard to practice survival skills, but if they carved out exceptions for survival training, there would be a lot of hunters claiming to be doing survival training to take advantage of more liberal rules.

About all that I can suggest is to get a map that shows BLM and National Forest lands. Generally, the BLM land is the least regulated, followed by land controlled by the Forest Service. BLM used to supply maps of the land under their supervision. If you pick a time period in the Fall, you may be able to get hunting and fishing seasons to overlap, but I don't know about trapping.

Another possibility is reservation land. Native American tribes have a fair amount of discretion over their lands and some will rent the right to hunt, fish, etc. You would probably have fewer problems with building shelters if you had permission to do it on reservation land than if you tried to do it on BLM land.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but your question is a tough one.

I don't think you're going to find what you want in the USA.
Maybe Mexico?

Good luck,
Allen.
