Greetings, I am considering a Camillus CQB, a Benchmade Nimravus,or a Griptilian FB. I will be using this blade for wilderness carry and maybe emergency protection. Any information or recommendations are appreciated.

Out of those three I would probably pick the nimravus. I honestly have not handled either of the other two. I like the g10 handles on the nimravus over the grip. The grip may have a stronger tip due to the blade shape. both would probably make excellent carrys. No idea on the CQB. Personally for the same activity I carry a Fallkniven F1 that I really like.

I am not slamming you but, why do you think a knife is going to be the solution? Good gosh man get a 9mm or a 40 S&W or 357 Magnum if you think a wild animal is going to come in your camp! For wild Bikers on drugs you will need a Macine Gun of some sort! IMHO.

I didn't read that intention in his question. I agree that for "protection" a gun is better however he said wilderness "carry" and for "emergency" protection. I carry my gun when backpacking but do consider the knife that i use for the 99% percent of things that my gun can't accomplish in the wilderness as my "emergency back up"

True, but tell that guy in California with a Mountain Lion eating on his head that! I think a knife has its place but, good gosh what is your life worth if attacked by a Mountain Lion or Grizzly Bear? A knife probebly would only pee em off more!

Whether or not he carrys a firearm, anyone going camping without a knife is a moron. As a result, his question is relevant. Besides, anyone with the duke as his avatar deserves an answer...pilgrim.

For me, I usually pack a ka-bar, or a SOG seal 2000. Out of the choices you listed, I think any would serve your needs adequately. Pick the one that feels best in the hand.

I too would pick the Nimravus. The blade is longer, and I personally think the design is better than the other two. For second choice I would pick the Griptilian, that is, IF I didn;t get a Ritter RSKMk3 (Benchmade fixed Griptilian modified for Doug Ritter) instead.

The Nimravus you can get for aout $110; the Ritter RSK Mk3 for $165 (www.equipped.org), and the BM fixed Griptilian for about $65. Although it wasn;t an option you mentioned, I'd also consider Kabar's new Impact series spearpoints. They look to be very craftily designed and have decent steel (D2). They are designed very much like the Nimravus and cost about $75.

Pogo,
My first reply was a little sarcastic and I am sorry for that. I am not sure how much time that you have spent in the wilderness or around animals but i think that you would be suprised.
While I again agree that a gun is more deadly and a good first defense, read through some of the stories in the link provided and note the number of people who fought off these animals with a knife or their bare hands.

Sorry to get so OT guys
Stretch those new Kabars are interesting. I would think that the swedge on the top would make them hard to baton with and I don't know about the zytel handles. Have you seen these in person? I would be interested to hear your opinion.

Hey TLR,
Yes, I did "fondle" one about 3 weeks ago in my favorite knife shop. I can't remember what happens to the swedge on the spine as it tapers out, you know I might not have even been paying attention to it when I handled it. Now that you mention it I wish I would have studied it more because this Impact series seems pretty good. I remember the handle being very broad, much more so than the Nimravus (which is only about 9/16").

Even the Nim is not the best at batoning. Between the scales and the tip, it narrows first, then widens at the swedge, before finally tapering out at the tip. So...you haven;t much room to baton...just a short broad shoulder of the spine. It does have more breadth along the spine than the Kabar though...that much I seem to remember.

I was just in that shop for a few minutes today but I didn;t look at the Kabar Impacts. As a side note, it doesn't appear Ontario will be producing a RAT-5 in D2 after all......

Man, sorry to slobber so much on your thread here Hilltopper. I hope it pertains to helping you make your choice.

I have the nimvravus and the fixed grip. Around the camp I prefer the fixed grip the extra belly in the blade really helps with food prep. That being said I would be perfectly comfortable with either one. had to add that the knife I carry and use the most is the ontario rat-3 in d2
