I was reminiscing the other day about the great times my wife and I had when we used to go wilderness camping, in my younger, healthier days. I wanted to make a utility camp knife that I would've liked to have on those trips. It kind of changed directions when I was making it and ended up looking and feeling more like a fighter than a camp.

6" Biased ladder damascus blade
1800's wrought iron anchor chain guard and sub guard (from Tony @ ysforge)
Black and regular ironwood burl handle
11" o.a. length

Thanks,
Dave

The blade is so shiny that I couldn't get a better pic.

That is a damn nice looking knife. Wrought iron is a favorite of mine for guards and fittings. It is soft and scratches easily, but I love the way it looks.

Thanks very much you guys!!

Keith, you're right about the wrought so I lightly pre-distressed it for that reason , I agree it's some nice material

Stunning work. The damascus pattern is one of the most beautiful I have seen. And the handle makes me want to grab the knife off my screen.

That is a show stopper right there! Fantastic work. Pardon my ignorance, but what does 'biased' refer to as far as the ladder pattern goes?

Great knife Dave. Your material choice couldn't have been better; all the components are complimentary. The blade profile looks great, and I really like the sweges. I'm impressed.

Thanks again!!

Just so it's not misunderstood, I use the stock removal method of knife making. I would love to forge but unfortunately due to health issues, I'm not able. I purchase quality pattern welded bar stock and this beauty was forged by Michelle Whitmus. The makers of the bars name each pattern and since I don't forge can only guess how they arrived at the pattern and the name. I purchased several different patterned bars made by Matt and Michelle and will be using them to make more knives of this type.

Sorry for any confusion, I should've mentioned it in my original post but didn't give it a thought at the time. Out of respect for the very talented makers of the damascus that I use, I'll make a point of mentioning their names in my future posts.

Dave

I included another pic to hopefully show better the great ladder effect in the blade.
Another pic showing my initial, middle of the night sketch of the "cartoon" :) guard

Dakcon,

I thought you said in a previous post that your next knife would be totally different. This one is a great looking knife, just like all the previous ones, what's different?

;)

I think that you really have handles nailed down. Once again, this one looks really comfy and secure to hold.

Hmmm.....I have some wrought iron, I have some ironwood.......now I just need some talent! Wonderful combination, well done. :D

Thanks you guys!!

It was a lot of fun to make and airyq, I'm really looking forward to my next fixed blade knife, it'll look completely different from anything that I've ever made. :p
