From the time I was a young child ,growing up near Prescott Arizona, I wanted to live in the wilderness. I hung out with friends who shared my passion. We camped .hiked and worked in the woods when we got older. When I was 17 I took off on a hitchhiking trip through 45 states and Canada. I ended up in Alaska and was two weeks late for the start of school. I returned to Alaska for the summers working as a remote fire guard and have lived here year around after getting married 30 years ago. Although I have only spent a total of one year in the bush It does me good to know it is out the back door.
A couple of months ago I was at the airport with my large family sending off my grandson to Marine Corps boot camp when I set next to guy who looked familiar . As we talked it turns out he was a friend from my childhood in Arizona who when he was 16 dropped out of school bought a horse , moved into the woods and and became a trapper. I had not seen him in over 30 years. It is a small world. He had recently moved his daughters and their families here to Alaska and is now living off the grid.
