In a long term sruvival situation, before you realized its going to be a while, what do you search for to eat first? Do you look for edibital plants or start building traps for game? Just curious what everyone will say. Myself I think I would look for plants, but with in a few days I would begin building traps and hunting for food.

...for at least the 1st 36-48 hours. Shelter, Fire, Medical, Signaling all come first. Next comes water supply. Much more important. Then it would be fishing, gathering (both plants and things like insects, eggs, etc), trappping, and hunting; in that order. I too am interested in others thoughts on this topic.

I don't see the two (three?) as being in opposition to each other.

When forced to take a 30 mile hike with no food, tools but what I had on me (Buck 110 & a Bic lighter), I did both at the same time. I didn't gain any weight, but I had something to eat each evening. (No traps, as I had to put the miles behind me.)

Assuming shelter, fire, and water are taken care of, I would first start looking for bugs, worms, etc (quick protein). Next would be making traps for small game, then forage for edible plants, and last would be hunting. That's assuming Spring, Summer, Fall in my area. If in Winter, then trapping and hunting would be first.

Grampa, what did you do about water? Was it easy to procure in the area?

That would be my repsonse, depending on the seasons and location of course. like the water supply and if I am near a stream or isolated lake etc.

There was a seasonal creek that had occasional potholes. Since I could follow the creek for most of the way, there was enough water. Without that, it would have been much tougher, as it was a semi-desert area.
