I never got around to buying a set for my SKS when I had it, but I recall you should buy the AK/SKS Sight Adjustment tool so you can get the old site out and adjust the new one properly.

I have Firesights on a handgun and a rifle. I like them on the rifle. I have a hard time focusing on them on the handgun, maybe it's the shorter sight radius or the fact there is a v notch rear sight on it, IDK. I'd put one on a rifle again.

What's wrong with an SKS?

It's cheaper and more accurate than an AK. It uses stripper clips in place of detachable magazines. (unless modded) It is not a Mforgery.

I have no problem with the SKS other than I didn't buy a case when they were $75.

I agree with you 100%. I've owned several over the years and regret selling each one. It's hard to find a more durable rifle than an SKS. Throw it in the river, fish it out 6 months later, as long as it isn't rusted solid, it's going to function and fire. The ones that I've had were pretty accurate for a cheap rifle shooting cheap surplus ammo. Two of them would do 5 shot groups around 2" with open sights at 100 yds. I'm sure that they would have done better with the right person behind the gun.

They are a solid and decent rifle and I believe still a bargain at todays prices. One area that they lack is the sight but it sounds like you are fixing that. I have tech sights on my 10-22's and love em. They had several versions and have improved the design at least for the .22's. The only other thing I would add is that you might want to consider attending an Appleseed shoot. It has helped me and a number of friends alot. And it goes without saying lay up some ammo.

Josh

right on paperairplane i remember the 75 $ sks. my brother bought one out to his ranch with dissasemble instructions to get my opinion. i said these are ugly but great for function, the bolt is well machined & the barrel is chrome lined. i bought 3 of them & 2 cases of ammo.[ for a rainy day]. i heard some seals say that if they had to come from the ocean from underwater & sweep the beach for enemies these were the guns for initial attack . after killing the local trash they throw the sks away & proceed on the mission with their good weapons.--dennis

my suggestion would be to buy a better rifle than a SKS.

the SKS is a battle proven design a great simple rifle whats is very accurate in good hands. my Tula SKS is my favorite rifle. what do you suggest as a better rifle?

If you get a quality sks (read: russian) then thats a good survival carbine. Other types don't have chrome lined barrels and can have serious gas system issues if equipped with the grenade launcher attachment.

However, if wilderness survival is what you're looking for, its really hard to beat a marlin lever action or a enfield bolt action.
