I have been looking around at wilderness survival schools/courses. Hopefully I don't get flamed for asking this. Which school is better or why would someone choose one over the other such as the RAT courses vs the Tom Brown Jr school?

I would be interested in practicality and not cultish behavior. We all joke around here about cultish behavior when it comes to what we are into but I don't think you could find a more diverse group of people that will be polite until it is time to throw someone the middle finger, rigid and stiff. :D

I'm not interested in The Great Spirit or anything else, just like when I wanted to learn how to take people apart, I wasn't interested in religion or anything "spiritual."

So, anything that stinks of having a s*^tload of "followers" or anything "mystical," I avoid.

I also avoid calls to authority because someone says they were SF or some other secret squirrel s^*t (SSS).

Honestly, Tom Brown interjects alot of "living with the earth" spiritual mumbo jumbo into his classes.

If that's what your looking for than go for it.

RAT training is more on a no nonsense, keep your ass alive style.

There's also Onpoint tactical in NJ, Kevin, the owner, was a teacher at Tom Browns school and brings alot of the quality teaching without alot of the spiritual stuff.

He also teaches urban E+E skills along with alot of other valuable stuff.

I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket though. I would let the learning be a constant thing and attend as many schools as I could afford.

scheduling, price, type of terrain, basic philosophy of the instructor, etc...
the wilderness & survival skills forum here has several threads on this specific topic.
since you're not a paid member, you can't search the forum directly, but you can do a google search and include "site: bladeforums" plus your search terms to do a close approximation of it.

good luck!

I usually mistrust people that claim SS. Can't be too SS if you tell people about it ;-)

I have known plenty of Seals that in civ life constantly point back to their Seal status, but pull their records and they were not operators.

Ah, very cool, thanks. I am probably going to become a paid member here very shortly. Still making sure I like this forum, but so far it seems worth it.

Yeah, this does not interest me and that is what I keep hearing about Brown's school.

The Urban EE class is on my to do list for '10. Wish they would come through Houston instead of always hitting Dallas, but oh well.

Ah, thanks for the tip! I am probably going to become a paid member here very shortly. Still just making sure this forum is worth it, but so far it really seems to be.

Ghost - I appreciate the EDC & BOB bags you posted, so I hope you decide to hang around as I suspect you've got plenty to contribute.
there is some good info & idea stuff to be had in this sub and BF as a whole.

Thanks! I plan to. Very friendly and helpful folks in here. I have to say I have been surprised and impressed to see the regualarity that the RAT staff posts - even in response to my often goofy questions.

A friend on The Survival Podcast has been hassling me to get pics of my BOB. Need to take those and will post them when I have them.

Kevin is a great guy, very "real" and no BS.

I read a pretty good review months ago of portions of that class. Looks pretty cool. Earlier reports from about four years ago when he was starting out were not so great from someone I was talking with at the time. Pretty cool to see him leave a lot of the other stuff behind.

Well, most people in Special Operations are not "Operators" as the term originated, anyway. I know companies that make gear love to use that term but that term was originally conceived because they couldn't call Delta Troopers "Agents" and they were trying to find some type of term that fit the legal status of unique Antiterrorist Personnel which would later also cover SEAL Team 6, whatever the name for them might be now as well...it seems as though the Army and Navy are playing musical chairs with Delta to CAG and ST6 to DevGroup or whatever.

And then you have certain CIA Paramilitary Teams that could be referred to accurately as "Operators."

But when you have part time deputies in California referring to themselves as "Operators," it's getting more than a little bit out of hand. In general, police are not "operators" although a lot of them are glomming onto that which is sickening IMO.
