Hey All,
Im looking for a good treo for short term wilderness "survival" and general camping, backpacking, etc. I say good because i dont want to spend alot, and i know realy good or great is more than i can afford. However, I think I can get decent gear for the range i want to be in. (I'v seen the Ka-Bar Bowie for $45)

I am thinking along the lines of:
1: leatherman or multi blade (must be loking) - $75ish
2: decent fixed or folding hunter - $50ish
3: hatchet or ka-bar bowie type - $50ish

** I use the term "survival" lightly as in - building a shelter, cutting fire wood, killing or "preping" small game if needed, making wire traps for squirrel... Not cut myself out of a prison, chop a 100yr oak tree down, or fight off an army convoy like chuck norris **

Thank for your input!

Don't know why you'd want a 'trio' unless you like packing extra weight. A MORA knife would likely cover all your needs for less than $10. A light ax would be useful for building shelter, chopping firewood etc., but if you're backpacking, a tent and a compact stove are worth the weight, compared to the hassle of building shelter and fires, which is prohibited in many areas.

True, but we usally do our "backpacking" on private land, so really what it is, is camping with limited supplies, and build a shelter for the fun of it. i dont do anything too serious so thats the other reason i dont want to spend alot of money.

Also consider SHTF type of senerio where everyone "heads to the hills"

I don't consider a multitool a knife. Why limit yourself to three? RAT RC5 for rough use and general survival utility, Gransfors Bruks camp axe, a Fallkniven F1 or RAT3 for slicing and skinning, and a used leatherman blast for 10 bucks on ebay.

oldschool, you might want to go ask this in the wilderness and survival subforum here on BF.

Here's a thread on that very topic.

Good group of guys over there. Oh, and welcome.

Frank

P.S. I would rather have a Swiss Army Knife with a saw than a Leatherman. Cheaper, lighter. The money I saved on the SAK would go toward a good mid-sized fixed blade. Fallkniven, Bark River, Ka-Bar, Becker, Cold Steel, Buck, Himalayan Imports, Benchmade, SOG. There are so many good choices it really comes down to how big your mitts are, if you like old fashioned tool steel or high tech stainless, natural or synthetic scales. For the big blade that depends on where you are. If you deal with smaller green vegetation you might be well served with a machete like a Tram bolo or an Ontario. If you're in a thick woody area you might want a Gransfors, Wetterling or Snow & Neally axe or maybe a khukuri.
