Will alcohol damage phenolic handle ?

I just picked up a new (old stock) buck 118 personal. Problem is, it spent the last 15 years in a display case, with velcro attached to the handle. Normally I would use rubbing alcohol to remove adhesive, but I want to know if alcohol will damage the black phenolic handle. Does anyone know ?

According to Buck Knives you should have no problem with using alcohol to clean the phenolic handle material on your knife.

The quotation below is from the Buck Knives website home page in the Technology and Innovation FAQ:

"Can I use harsh detergents and solvents to clean my Buck Knife?
All of our knives are made with materials that are intended to be chemical resistant, so it is okay to clean with chemical solvents such as Acetone (nail polish remover), MEK, alcohol, or paint thinner. Avoid harsh detergents that contain Chlorine, which can accelerate the corrosion of the blade steel. This includes many dish washing detergents, and dishwashing machines. Most importantly is to avoid prolonged immersion in anything -- water or solvents, especially knives with wood handles.

Hand washing with warm water and a mild detergent is all that is needed to clean a knife. Once the knife is cleaned and thoroughly dried, always apply a thin film of protective oil to the blade. This will prevent corrosion of the high-carbon blade steel from atmospheric moisture."

Some WD-40 usually does the trick.

I am happy that I was able to help. Your question tickled my memory and I finally remembered where I had read Buck's comments on use of chemicals in knife care.

Now if I can just remember where I left my keys ............
