I have loved this knife since I first saw it but I just cant get past the 440c blade steel. Will benchmade ever change it to 154cm? Who else would be onboard for this?

From what I've read and my own personal experience Benchmade really nailed the heat treat on their 440C. In fact they still use it in their Gold Class Chef's knives.

I hear you on wanting another steel though, but if you really like that model you may want to consider giving it a chance?

I've used it and to tell you the truth I couldn't really tell much difference from the 440C, 154CM, and ATS-34.

Best of luck.

I suppose I might give it a try. Does anyone know how 440c compares to vg10?

In what way?

I'm not a steel expert by any means but they are all pretty similar. It really comes down to the heat treat though.

A so called better steel with a bad or less then optimal heat treat will be out preformed by the lesser steel with the better heat treatment every time.

I would say 440C is slightly more stain resistant then VG-10 but VG-10 will hold an edge longer. This is all thing's being equal though. Edge geometry of the particular blade will factor in too.

Like I said, I don't really think you would be disappointed with BM's 440C but in the end get what you want and will make you happy.

There a lot of good threads on steel comparisons if you search for them. Let me have a quick look and see what I can find for you.

If you want better steel, you will probably need to spring for the 525. Has aluminum handles, but comes with a higher grade steel.

Wherever I saw the details had it listed as hollow ground. Is that accurate?

I am getting in the 520 and the 522, I will keep you up to speed on the grind of the 440C, but I am hearing fave reviews from an esteemed BM collector and user.

440C takes a fantastic edge, it should not sway you from it though. BM has these two steels(154CM/440C) down pat as mentioned.

If you are going to use it, it is well worth trying the 440C- I have a few customs with it, nothing wrong with it.

It is hollow ground, my brother has a 527 and I really like the blade geometry, it is thick at the spine, but very thin at the cutting edge, it slices well.

Benchmade and their abundant use of 154cm. Id like to see more m390 to be honest, I love this steel.

M390 is over priced(great if you are reselling on the seconds market though), 154cm works great, keeps costs down, is well balanced, heat and temper is consistent, excellent user steel. Nothing wrong with 440C and D2 either.

The sprints and dealer runs of speciality alloys are more than enough for the market( also great if you are reselling on the seconds market).

I am pleased that a USA made manufacturer brings this quality and value to the consumer.

Nothing wrong with 154cm, I don't mind it. It would just be nice to change things up from time to time. Variety is the spice of life.

I hear you loud and clear, talk about spice and variety:- How about G10 and CF scales for the Presidio? (my little gripe)
