Will BRAM's gunting knife benefit me?

BRAM's new knife looks very interesting and I am sorely tempted to try and get one later on.

However, I hesitate because it may not be very useful to me in the present situation that I am in.

In my country(Singapore)and the countries around me (Malaysia,Indonesia,Thailand,Philipines) you will generally get into trouble if you are found carrying a blade in urban areas.

Laws are not clear and their application is somewhat haphazard. I know for sure that I will not be carrying a blade in my own country, but I would be happy to carry it other countries, which are sadly more crime-ridden.

Even so, I get the feeling that the gunting is not made to be very concealable, correct me if I am mistaken. This is because it rides quite high up in the pocket, and that ramp is supposed to stick out too.

I suppose, in BRAM's case, the people carrying it will be doing so legally, so concealment is not so essential.

But for myself, I will need a very concealable knife, since I don't want it noticed by the local law enforcement in the other countries.

Because of this,I have sadly decided to hold back on my initial desire to obtain the gunting.

However, I wish BRAM and all those who are getting it all the very best. Even with all the promotion in this forum, one can't deny that the gunting has got something abt it that makes people sit up and take notice of it.

Let's hope the knife makes it up there along with all those other MA weapons that have found a certain measure of fame.

Best wishes from SYK

There will also be a non-edged version of the Gunting available. The CRIMPIT can be used in various pressure point strikes and manipulations from what I've heard and might be legal to carry. Of course, if a kubotan is illegal to carry in your area than the CRIMPIT might be too.

Thanks for your reply, Simon.

I think I am not interested in the CRIMPIT, because I want an edged weapon. To me, a CRIMPIT might not give me much more than I already have with my unarmed "abilities".

To make the CRIMPIT work better than my hands and legs,I'd have to spend a lot of time working with it and I'm not willing to do this. I also am not sure abt the validity of restraining and pain work for self-defence purposes. For LEO work, they would be useful, but I'm no longer in that line.

Basically, I'm just looking for the skills and the knife(s) to even up the odds if I am ever involved in an encounter with edged weapons.

SYK: if you guys can carry a less than three inch knife or less than 8.5 centimeters blade then you can carry a GUNTING. The clip keeps it from being concealed..1" sticks out of the pocket or carry it in the breakaway sheath.
As for the CRMIPT Tool it can enhance you empty hand effectiveness easily..this is not rocket science!..As Tim Tacket has shown, gunting motions without a tool are fool hardy at times but with a tool like the GUNTING:CRMIPT...well its a new ball game..
I just got back this morning from treaching TACTICAL knife:GUNTING seminar...
Of course its legal here..I do not design nor do we/SPYDERCO make illegal tools...
that would be pointless

Dear BRAM,thank you for your reply. I really appreciate you taking the time and trouble to reply to some stranger like me on the internet.

In my country,if you carry any kind of knife at all,you may get into legal trouble. Having worked as an LEO here for abt 2 years(this was abt 10 years ago),I know this to be true.

No matter what sort of knife I have, I won't be carrying it daily in my country(which has low crime). But if I go to the countries around here(which are crime-ridden)I want to carry a knife. But it has to be concealable because the LEOs in those countries will definitely give you trouble if they notice it.

Perhaps there might be someway later on to make the gunting more concealable?

Anyway,I wish you all the best with your gunting--once again,it really looks interesting.

Goodnight and best wishes from the far east

SYK: Hey, thatswhat I'm here for!
you could conceal it or as I said carry the CRMIPT tool...
We make a shoulder harness that you can wear under a shirt or vest..a break away belt holster..or carry it in your pocket..the clip is black, knife is black..hmmm it sort of dissappears!
we are designing one to fit in the smallof you back, and when you pull it the blade opens!
Lots of options!

SYK,

If all else fails, you can take the clip off! If you can get a multipocket vest like I always try to have on, then you can put it in the strong side pocket, and one in the "weak" side pocket as well, althought we endeavor not to have a "weak" side. I think you know what I mean.

You should be able to get a multipocket vest that is nice and will give you lots of pockets to carry your stuff around in when you are traveling. You do not even need carry-on luggage with a nice vest.

Also, if you do not want to go that way, 2 serrated Spyderco Enduras go a long way towards making you feel a lot safer at night. And if you have to chuck them in the water, no problemo.

The Gunting, is a very fast opening knife. You would like it, opens smooth as silk.

Good vests are available through Brigade Quartermasters at www.actiongear.com

They are an every day item for me, but for traveling, they are even better. Brigade has about 3-5 different kinds, there is a military load bearing vest there too, you do not want that in another country though, that could cause obvious problems.

Hope this helped.

Don Rearic and BRAM, thanks for your words.

Since BRAM says that the gunting is actually quite concealable(in the pocket), I'll have a good look at it and its options when it comes out and will strongly consider buying it.

Although I don't know anything abt knives, what attracts me about the gunting is that it seemingly can be used in some ways that other knives cannot. It is more of an "MA-friendly" weapon rather than "just"a fast folding knife.

As to wearing multipocketed vests when travelling, this is what I always do,thanks for the tip.

I reckon if you can`t pack a 3" knife; you are up the creek anyway. No matter what;you are an outlaw. You may as well get used to it.

I was trained in kubaton in the `70`s,along with the PR-24, and did use it a couple of times.Mostly they are handy to keep your keys from getting lost.I have one on most of my key rings. I tried the ASP Mini, but it is too light to really use.Expanded,it is nice for probing places you don`t want to put your hand.

Haven`t talked with you in a while Don. I`ll send you an E-Mail.
