Will Buck replace my knife?

Admittedly I don't know much about Buck, much less the name of my knife. My mom bought me this knife probably about 15 years ago for use at my summer survival camp. I used it for quite a few years, then put it in a box when I stopped going to camp. I just recently was going through some old things and found my old knife.

I remember that when I was given this knife it had a slight bend in the blade. I tried to capture that in one of the photos but it's hard to see unless you actually hold it. Also it seems that somewhere along the line I broke the tip. My question to the forum (and Buck if you read this) is would you replace it? I'm not even sure if I want it replaced... This specific knife has some sentimental value since it was my first knife. Of course I wish it was still in great condition, but I'm not sure if I could part with this even if Buck would replace it. Just curious what you guys think I should do.

Here are some pics I just snapped. I tried to get the curve in the blade but it was hard to capture. Again, that curve was there when I purchased the knife. The tip I must have broken but can't recall when.

Blade is bent or warped at the start of the belly. Note the darker reflection.

Seeing as it's a fixed blade Vanguard, the only BUCK can do other than replacing the the knife is to retip it. There is nothing else you can do to it. As to the curve in the blade, if it doesn't affect the use of the knife, why worry about it. Call BUCK's customer service and they can tell you more.

A case where the knife didn't survive the survival camp?

Looks to me like the blade got bent when the person using it twisted it when it was stabbed into a tree and broke the tip in the process of the activity.

That's abuse and voids the warranty.

Bought one off the bay with the tip broken off like yours. I re-shapped the tip and here it is next to a regular one.

Thanks for the input. The bend isn't really a bend, more like it's warped just in that one spot. That was there when I was given the knife, I do remember that. It never affected the function of the knife so I didn't worry about it. The tip breaking was most likely my own fault I just don't remember how or when it happened. So it sounds like way my own negligence isn't covered under the Buck warranty?

So you used a designated, proven, hollow ground hunting knife at a survival school where you wrecked it years ago and now wonder if Buck will replace it. Hummmm, looks like abuse to me.

Yes to your first point - I was between the ages of 9-13 at that time. Abuse, no. I take care of my things, still have the original case. I probably tried to pry something and broke the tip.

Edit: just found the website for the camp I used to attend during that time. http://www.hawkcircle.com/
Like I said in my post, this knife has sentimental value so I don't even know if I would part with it. Just curious to see if Buck would replace the knife with their warranty. Recently I only purchase ESEE knives and they warranty anything, no questions asked. Maybe I should just stick to them and keep my old Buck the way it is.

Recently I only purchase ESEE knives...

Well, that wouldn't exactly encourage Buck to give you a free $90.00 knife, now would it?

If you talk to them, probably better to leave that kind of talk out of the conversation.

;)

If you stick with knives long enough you will see the value & quality of a Buck knife, which is designed to "cut" things. ESEE, been there done that, sold em all.

Edit: I actually regret selling my Izula & will replace it very soon.

Antrieb,

It would be worth your while to call Buck and ask them. I'm sure that they can and will reprofile your blade for you. They may not do it under warranty but their prices are very reasonable, and if as you say it has alot of sentimental value it will be well worth it.

As far as abuse is concerned, I'm sure that most of us at one time or another have damaged a knife by doing something with it that we shoudn't have. I know I have, so don't let a lot of the critical remarks bother you.

Let those among us who've never made a mistake or used a little poor judgement cast the first stones!

Call Buck!

Welcome to the Buck forum Ant! Hey,don't worry about breaking the tip off a blade when you were a boy.Grown men have done it too, they just won't admit it:eek:.Fist off you're Mom has good taste in knives. The Vangaurd is a great blade. If it was my knife I would call Buck at (800) 215-2825 and explain what happened and ask them what the charge would be to re profile you're blade and clean and sharpen it.You didn't lose much of the tip and it won't cost much to make it like new again.I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.:D

Agreed! Being that it's a fixed blade, a professional reshaping of the tip will be hardly noticable and won't affect the usability. If it was a folder, a shortened and reprofiled blade usually stands our like wart on your nose, but I doubt you will even notice it with yours.

Hey guys that's a great idea! I never thought of having the knife reprofiled. That way I get to keep my knife and get the tip back. Thanks for your suggestions! I'll call them up this afternoon.

Your 192 is a backward C Which is a 1996 model.

Like edbeau showed, it can be reprofiled. Wouldn't take much for this one.

Here is one that I did after my brother broke the tip off.

Not too hard to do.

Here it is up against one just like it with the normal tip

Glad to hear you're going to have it reprofiled:thumbup: Still a lot of life left in that blade and you'll still have the blade your Mom gave you. You'll be impressed with their customer service, really good work and nice folks there at Buck.
