I have an old Skinner 103 from the 60's. I did not purchase it new. I was wondering if Buck would still sharpen it for me since I cannot seem to get a good edge on it with my lansky kit. Also it seems that the handle has a small crack on it and wonder if any of this is covered by a warranty.

Thanks,
Von

One of the sharpest knives I own is a 312 that I sent in for repair. It came back to me repaired and scary sharp. The best part - no charge.

von, greetings. dont send anything to Buck until they get settled in idaho. on a knife that old the edge grind may be different than the lansky is set up for. the cracked handle cannot be replaced. on newer knives ,Buck would just replace the knife. i believe Buck charges 6$ for sharpening.

I met a few really nice local guys who own a cutlery shop with great sharpening and repair skills, and the best part is that they only charge a few dollars to make an edge and sharpen and clean up my knives. Its a little more convenient to have someone locally that can really do a good job sharpening older knives for me than me butchering them with my POS lansky.

hummm cant get an sharp edge with a lansky? gee that bothers me as lansky is almost fool proff...
how much ware is there that the edge is now 'missing' some steel? ie how much of the edge is gone ?
i ask as i have had blades that i could not sharpen as they weere warn past were the tempering /harding had good bennifits and it gets like trying to sharpen a butter knife... i would send to Buck... and if there is semental vlaue say so and thye may send it back with a new one,,, they dont always do so but hae been known to ...

Dave,

Well I only have fixed blade knives and the rather large ones at that. Lansky kits are great for small light knives, but when you try to clamp a large knife down, especially heavey ones with different contours like Bucks, it is really difficult to accurately sharpen it without it slipping around or falling out of the clamp. So rather than waste a lot of money on postage and having to wait a long time to get my knives back I had just decided to get my knives edged locally. Once I get them well edged I am going to buy a ceramic crock sharpener to keep them sharp. The knife was a 1960s 103 that I was inquiring about so I definitely would not want a replacement, I just wanted it edged and sharp so I can put it to more good use. I just wondered if Buck sharpened or repaired knives if I was not the original owner.

Thanks,
Von

Buck's warranty is lifetime on their knives. I've seen it posted here before that it didn't matter if the registration slip for the warranty was sent in or not. (when the knife was purchased) That being the case, the warranty should still be in effect whether or not you are the original owner. Buck's customer service is excellent.....I'm sure they would make you happy if you sent it in. If you do, contact Joe Houser about it 1st. He's a great guy & will do whatever he can to help you. He's usually here on this forum, but everyone at Buck is busy getting settled in with the move to Idaho.

I can attest to the quality of Buck's sharpening (and refurbishing). A few years back I sent in a Buck 709 that had a badly chipped edge. They put an outstanding edge on the knife and buffed out many of the nicks in the bolsters. It came back to me looking like new.
