Will CPM-S35VN replace CPM-S30V?

Any word on whether CPM-S35VN will be replacing CPM-S30V in regular production? CRK is moving in that direction, and what little I've snooped out seems to indicate that is easier to work with from the manufacturer's standpoint.

That would be very cool. I think the existing S30V stock would have to be used up completely first. I would love a Spyderco folder in S35VN.

Join the queue for the new Native, then! I'll be standing in line, too.

When the S35VN mule came out, there was doubt about future availability of the steel. The appearance of the Native is encouraging.

What would be even more awesome, would be replacing s30v with aogami super blue steel...

Different steels for different blades. The problem with that is that on USA models Spyderco tends to use only American made steels, it's the same scenario with the maker in Taiwan (USA steels on the Sage, GB, etc). Japanese models would be the only likely candidates to see the Aogami steels (Caly 3.5, Delica, Endura, etc.)

^^ This statement is very true... Sal said himself that he was thinking of incorporating the Super Blue on the Cali 3.5... Hopefully it will be available on some new kind of frame lock :D... As for the s35vn replacing s30v, only time will tell...

I have wanted a knife in this steel for a long time, but as a non-stainless it wouldn't be suited to the general user. Or at least, they would have to coat it with something to protect it from corrosion. No fun.

I too am somewhat apprehensive about a non-stainless folder. But I had to have an M4 Bradley, and I've heard great things about Super Blue, so if a Caly 3.5 came out in it I would get one.Although somewhat nervous about carrying around

Let me have a FFG Endura or Stretch2 with Aogami Super Blue... Would that not be the cooles thing ever!

I've heard they were. I thought CRK was saying their "Idaho Made" nonsense was supposed to start when they switch over to CPM-S35VN, but I guess they did it early.

I know this is a very new steel, but what exactly does this improve upon S30V? I know they added niobium to make the carbides more refined, and I know it's supposed to be easier to manufacture and sharpen. But is it predicted to be any tougher or hold an edge better? I can live with the rough and tough looking finish on my S30V, especially if it's not improving anything on edge retention or toughness. Hopefully someone with a better understanding can weigh in.

I don't think S35vn is hard to get - maybe because it is much more expensive than s30v right now it is not being used much-see Aldo's sight. Also inventories.

I'm no steel guru but from what I've gathered it has higher toughness than S30V. I pilfered this chart from somewhere:

The idea is that it is an incremental improvement over S30V, and just as practical for mass production or even more so.

From what I remember S35VN is supposed to be easier to HT for both Production and Custom makers than S30V. S30V can be a real bear to HT to 60 and over and if the tempering isn't correct it will be chippy.

So if it works out they could run S35VN harder than S30V in production blades so we could see an improvement in performance over S30V.

That is very positive! What would a good Rc for S35V? I read something a while back that 61-62 is pushing it but it worked.

Not too sure on that as there aren't any production blades available yet, but I think they could run it at 61.... that's guessing at this point.

I have seen Customs in S30V at 62 RC so anything might be possible.

That sounds more familiar. I guess we will have to see what teh Native V has in store. That will be a good model to test with.
What do you think about the triple tempering on the Crudader Forge S30V?
