I used some outers gun oil on my knife. Is this stuff OK? Should I clean it off? What should I clean my knife with? I have a bunch of denatured alcohol, is this OK? What common lube should I use?

If so, Glock is in trouble!;) :D

Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it. Frn is some durable stuff. For cleaning, soap & water will do the trick. For lube, I use Militec. For a nice, shiny blade, I use Flitz polish.

Do any big retailers carry this stuff or is it special order only? I'm going to the ocean this week and I want to be rust free. What about Mobil 1 or mineral oil?

I think the about the only thing that will damage FRN is fire!

FRN, and many polymers like what Glock pistols are made of can melt from DEET found in insect repellents. I have seen this happen from getting it on my hands and handling FRN knives afterwards. I have also read of reports of guys noticing the grips on their Glocks changing after using a DEET bug spray.

It seems I read a while back that the manufacturers of zytel, FRN, and other such plastics have been working on it. I know that Thermorun is immune to the effects of this which is probably why some manufactures making hunting and fishing knives are going to it for the handles. I noticed that Cold Steels Ultimate Hunter folder is made of that material and can't help but wonder if it isn't the first of many to be changed over. Time will tell I guess.
